Men's Hockey Falls At Maine, 3-1

ORONO, Maine - The Providence College men's hockey team was defeated at Maine, 3-1, on Saturday, December 5 in a Hockey East game played at Alfond Arena in Orono, Maine. With the win, the Black Bears completed the weekend series sweep as they improved to 8-7-1 overall and 6-4-1 in league play. The Friars are now 7-7-1 and 2-5-1 in Hockey East.

The Black Bears scored a power-play goal at 9:41 of the first period to take a 1-0 lead. Joey Diamond tucked in a loose rebound from in close as Will O'Neill and Jeff Dimmen assisted on the goal. However, the Friars responded on the power play to even the score at 12:27. Sophomore Daniel New (White Plains, N.Y.) skated to the red line and played the puck to the left wing to junior Matt Germain (Rockland, Mass.). Germain then skated into the Maine zone before sliding a cross ice pass to classmate Eric Baier (North Kingstown, Mass.) who tapped the puck into the net for his second goal of the season.

Maine regained the lead (2-1) at 4:39 of the second period when Kyle Solomon setup linemate Spencer Abbott who potted his fourth goal of the season off a wrist shot from the slot. Gustav Nyquist added an empty-net goal with 29 seconds left in the third period to seal the win.

PC sophomore goalie Alex Beaudry (Cumberland, Ont.) finished with 33 saves, including 20 stops in the first period. Maine's Scott Darling recorded 25 saves for the Black Bears.

The Friars are back in action on Friday, December 11 when they host UNH at Schneider Arena, while Maine will host Northeastern on Saturday, December 12 at Alfond Arena.
