PROVIDENCE, R.I. - The Providence College volleyball team (3-5) will travel to Pennsylvania to compete in the Lafayette/Lehigh Crosstown Tournament on Friday, September 11 and Saturday, September 12. Lehigh University will host Friday's action while Lafayette College will host the Saturday matches. On Friday, the Friars will play Rider at 3:00 p.m. and Lehigh at 6:00 p.m. in Bethlehem, Pa. On Saturday, Providence will battle Lafayette at 10:00 a.m. and Niagara at 1:00 p.m. in Easton, Pa.
Providence is coming off a 3-1 loss to Brown on Wednesday, September 9 in Mullaney Gymnasium. PC came out strong in the first set and prevailed, 25-22. However, Brown responded with three straight set victories, 25-22, 25-20 and 25-21, to claim the match victory.
Sophomore setter Carly Morrison (Larkspur, Calif.) posted a double-double with 34 assists and 11 digs against the Bears. For Morrison, it marked the third time in four matches that she recorded a double-double. On the year, Morrison ranks first on the Friars with 232 assists and is second on the team with 10 service aces in 2009. She will be counted upon to set up the Friar offense this weekend.
Scouting the Competition
Rider (2-6) The Broncs are coming off a 3-1 victory over LaSalle in the team's home opener in Lawrenceville, N.J. on Tuesday, September 8. Rider returns five starters from its 2008 squad that finished the season with a 9-19 record, including a 2-16 mark in the MAAC. Leading the Rider offense is senior Brittany Hayes. The Mitchellville, Md. native ranks first on the team with 53 kills and 15 total blocks. Senior defensive specialist Amy Jeary leads the Broncs with 116 digs in 2009.
Lehigh (2-5) Last time out, the Mountain Hawks defeated St. Francis (N.Y.), 3-0, in Bethlehem on Tuesday, September 8. Lehigh finished 2008 with an 8-20 record, including a 3-11 mark in Patriot League action. The team is led by sophomore Angelika Kopacz, who ranks first on the Mountain Hawks with 70 kills and second with 59 digs. Junior setter Brittany Dickinson leads the team with 126 assists.
Lafayette (4-1) The Leopards are coming off a 3-0 win at Coppin State on Wednesday, September 9 in Baltimore, Md. Lafayette finished 2008 with a 12-18 record, including a 5-9 mark in Patriot League play. The team is led by senior Cara Mulholland, who ranks first on the Leopard with 56 kills and 33 digs. Senior setter Ashton Rossi has notched 172 assists for Lafayette in 2009.
Niagara (5-3) Last time out, Niagara lost to the University of Buffalo, 3-0, on Wednesday, September 9 in Buffalo, N.Y. Saturday's matchup is the second of the season between the Purple Eagles and the Friars. On Saturday, August 30, Niagara defeated PC, 3-0, in the Niagara Invitational. The Purple Eagles are led by freshman Kari Honomichl who has recorded 104 kills on the year. Honomichl paced Niagara with 11 kills in the first matchup with PC.
What's Next? After this weekend's tournament, the Friars return home for a 6:00 p.m. match with Dartmouth College on Tuesday, September 15 in Mullaney Gymnasium at Alumni Hall. Admission is free.
