The Providence College women's soccer team opens BIG EAST play on Friday, September 18 when they host the University of Connecticut at 4:00 p.m. on Glay Field.
The Friars are coming off a 3-2 overtime victory against Stony Brook on Sunday, September 13. It was the fourth overtime match the Friars have played in 2009. In the sixth minute junior Kate DelCiampo (Wethersfield, Conn.) took a shot from 20 yards out that deflected off a Stony Brook defender and found the back of the net. The Seawolves tied up the score in the 36th minute and the game would remain tied at the half. Jill Camburn (Doylestown, Pa.) scored her fourth goal of the season when she one timed a cross from Courtney Collins (North Wales, Pa.) to give Providence the 2-1 lead. Stony Brook answered again in the 66th minute and tied the game up at, 2-2, sending the game into overtime. The Friars would prove their mental and physical toughness by pulling through in overtime behind Collins' first goal of the year and her second game-winning goal of her career. The Friars secured their fourth win of the season, edging the Seawolves, 3-2.
In 2009, the Friars have out shot their opponents, 118-46, and hold the edge in shots on goal, 45-25. Leading the way is Camburn, who has tallied 11 points on four goals and three assists. She also leads the team in shots and shots on goal with 27 and 12, respectively. On September 7, Camburn received BIG EAST Honor Roll accolades following a week when the Friars went 2-0. Camburn tallied an assist in a1-0 win over UMass, and had two more assists in a 3-1 defeat of Quinnipiac. Second on the team in points is Collins and Nicole Benko (Valley Stream, N.Y.), who both have three points with one goal and one assist.
Leading the way in goal is sophomore Caitlin Walker (Metuchen, N.J.) who has started five games. She has posted a 3-0-1 record, with two shutouts for the Friars. Walker has played a total of 424 minutes only giving up two goals and averaging a minute 0.42 goals against average.
CONNECTICUT (4-2): The Huskies enter the 2009 season ranked 20th, according to the Soccer America Preseason poll and hope to improve upon a 2008 season after going 7-9-6 overall and 4-3-4 in the BIG EAST. The 2008 season marks the first time UConn did not make the NCAA Tournament in the program's history, ending a 26-year streak (1982-2007).
UConn returns 11 players, including seven of their top nine scorers, and welcomes seven freshmen. The Huskies welcome back Brittany Taylor, a 2007 All-American and Hermann Trophy candidate who sat out all of 2008 due to injury. SoccerAmerica named Taylor a 2009 Preseason First-Team All-American and in 2009 she has played in all six games and has two assists.
The Huskies are 4-2 in 2009 with victories against Harvard, Boston University and Wake Forest, who was ranked No. 8 in the national poll at the time of play. They were defeated by Brigham Young and then-No. 8 Penn State. Linda Ruutu leads UConn with nine points on three goals and three assists.
Leading the way in goal for the Huskies is Jessica Dulski who has played in seven games for a total of 457 minutes. She has a 3-2 record with one shutout. Dulski has a 0.816 save percentage and a 1.38 goals against average. On September 14, Dulski received her first BIG EAST Goalkeeper of the Week honor, following a week where UConn went 2-0, including a 1-0 shutout against Boston University and a 4-2 victory against No. 8 Wake Forest. She had a career-high 10 saves.
