PROVIDENCE, R.I. - The Providence College volleyball team (4-9) will compete in the South Carolina State Spikefest on Friday, September 18 and Saturday, September 19 in Orangeburg, S.C. On Friday, the Friars will face Hampton at 11:00 a.m. and Wofford at 3:00 p.m. PC will take on UNC-Asheville and Winston-Salem State on Saturday at 9:00 a.m. and 3:00 p.m., respectively.
Providence is coming off a 3-0 defeat on Tuesday, September 15 at home against Dartmouth. Sophomore middle blocker Lauren Fletcher (Syracuse, N.Y.) led the Friars with six kills, while classmate Carly Morrison (Larkspur, Calif.) recorded a team-high 14 assists. Morrison also added five digs for PC.
Morrison has been a solid contributor to the Friars this season from the setting position after replacing last year's starter Sara Sheehan, who ranks third all-time at PC with 3,357 assists. Morrison leads the Friars on the season with 352 assists and ranks third on the squad with 89 digs. The Larkspur, Calif. native also leads Providence with four double-doubles in 2009.
The PC offense has also been bolstered by the emergence of sophomore Lauren Hendel (Lloyd Harbor, N.Y.). The 5-10 outside hitter ranks third on the Friars with 85 kills and has led the team in kills in matches against Niagara on Aug. 29 and Rider on September 11.
Scouting the Competition
Hampton (2-7) The Lady Pirates are coming off a 3-0 loss to William & Mary on September 12 at the Georgetown Classic in Washington, D.C. Hampton is led offensively by junior outside hitter Brittany Wynne. The junior outside hitter has recorded 56 kills in 2009 and is third on the team with 25 digs. Sophomore setter Lihi Elkayam leads the Lady Pirates with 149 assists and has notched eight service aces on the season.
Wofford (8-2) The Terriers are coming off a 3-0 win over Winston-Salem State on Tuesday, September 15 in Spartanburg, S.C. Wofford is 8-2 after being picked to finish fifth in the South Division of the Southern Conference in the league's 2009 preseason poll. The team is led offensively by senior outside hitter Shanna Hughes. Hughes ranks first on the Terriers with 98 kills and is second on the squad with 88 digs. Senior libero Sarah Palmer has notched 122 digs on the year for Wofford.
UNC-Asheville (8-4) The Bulldogs are coming off a 3-0 win over Winston-Salem State on Saturday, September 12 in Winston-Salem, N.C. Asheville is led offensively by senior middle blocker Lauren Ficker. Ficker has notched 137 kills on the year and leads the team with 21 total blocks. Junior setter Rachel Guinane has posted 365 assists in 2009 for Asheville.
Winston-Salem State (1-10) The Rams are coming off a 3-0 loss at Wofford on Tuesday, September 15 in Spartanburg, S.C. Winston-Salem State is led by senior outside hitter Annika Barnwell. Barnwell ranks first on the team with 103 kills and is second on the squad with 65 digs. Junior libero Erica Cole leads the Rams defensively with 106 digs.
What's Next? After this weekend, Providence will return home to host the Sixth Annual Friar Classic on September 25 and 26 in Mullaney Gymnasium. On Friday, September 25, the Friars will play St. Francis (N.Y.) at 8:00 p.m. On Saturday, September 26, PC will battle Coppin State at 11:00 a.m. and New Hampshire at 5:00 p.m. Admission to all matches in the Friar Classic is free.
