Volleyball Splits Two Matches In First Day Of SC Spikefest

ORANGEBURG, S.C. - The Providence College volleyball team (5-10) defeated Hampton University, 3-0, and fell to Wofford College, 3-1, on Friday, September 18, in the first day of the South Carolina State Spikefest in Orangeburg, S.C. An impressive four Friars posted double-digit digs against Wofford.

Against Hampton, the Friars won in straight sets, 25-14, 26-24 and 25-13. Sophomore middle blocker Lauren Fletcher (Syracuse, N.Y.) and senior outside hitter Abby Majewski (Sunderland, Mass.) each posted seven kills to lead the Friar attack. Sophomore setter Carly Morrison (Larkspur, Calif.) notched 23 assists to set up the PC offense and Muzzonigro posted a match-high 10 digs to lead the Friars defensively. Providence held a 34-to-27 advantage in kills and an impressive 34-to-9 advantage in digs.

In the match against Wofford, the Terriers took the opening set, 25-20, but the Friars rallied back to claim the second set, 27-25. Wofford won the next two sets, 25-11 and 25-19, to earn the match victory.

Providence was led offensively against Wofford by sophomore middle blocker Lauren Fletcher (Syracuse, N.Y.), who posted 14 kills and added four total blocks. The Friars played a solid all-around game defensively, with four players recording double-digit kills. Sophomore setter Carly Morrison (Larkspur, Calif.) posted 12 digs to go along with her 32 assists, recording her fifth double-double of the season. Freshman defensive specialists Cassie Muzzonigro (Gibsonia, Pa.) and Shelby Spicer (Ft. Lauderdale, Fla.) posted 16 digs and 11 digs, respectively.

Wofford won the match largely in part to a 62-to-40 advantage in kills and 21-to-9 advantage in total blocks. Stacy Byrd led the Terriers with 19 kills. Arden Anderson added 10 kills and posted a match-high seven total blocks for the Terriers.

Providence remains in Orangeburg for the second day of the South Carolina Spikefest on Saturday, September 19. The Friars will face UNC-Asheville at 9:00 a.m. and Winston-Salem State at 3:00 p.m.
