PROVIDENCE, R.I. -
The Providence College volleyball team (6-11) will compete in the Sixth Annual Friar Classic on September 25 and 26 in Mullaney Gymnasium. The Friars will host the round-robin tournament, welcoming St. Francis (N.Y.), Coppin State and New Hampshire to the Renaissance City. On Friday, September 25, Providence will take on St. Francis (N.Y.) at 8:00 p.m. On Saturday, September 26, the Friars will face Coppin State at 11:00 a.m. and New Hampshire at 5:00 p.m. Live, streaming video will be available for all of PC's matches through the subscription service on Friars.com.
Providence is coming off a 3-1 defeat of Winston-Salem State on Saturday, September 19 in the final day of the South Carolina State Spikefest. Against the Rams, sophomore middle blocker Lauren Fletcher (Syracuse, N.Y.) posted 15 kills and hit at an impressive .483 clip. On the season, Fletcher leads the Friars with 187 kills and 58 total blocks. Her 15 solo blocks rank first among Independent Volleyball student-athletes and her 187 kills and .483 hitting percentage both rank second.
As a team, the Friars have been a force at the net in 2009. Providence's 636 kills and 101 total blocks rank second among Independent Volleyball teams. In the team's match against Rider on Sept. 11, Providence held a 14-to-5 advantage in total blocks. The team will look to continue this strong effort in its three matches this weekend.
Scouting the Competition
St. Francis (N.Y.) (0-7, 0-1)
In the Terrier's last match, the team fell at Quinnipiac, 3-0, on September 20 in the team's Northeast Conference opener. Senior middle blocker Detelina Dimitrova paced St. Francis with nine kills and 10 digs against the Bobcats. On the season, the Terrier offense is led by junior outside hitter/right side Anisa Lila. Lila has notched 98 kills on the season and is tied for second on the team with seven total blocks. Junior libero Liliana Rodriguez leads St. Francis with 108 digs in 2009.
Coppin State (0-12, 0-0)
In Coppin State's last match, the Eagles fell to Loyola (Md.), 3-0, on September 16 in North Baltimore, Md. Against the Greyhounds, sophomore outside hitter Ashley Saunders led CSU with five kills, nine digs and two total blocks. Saunders ranks first on the team with 71 kills and 23 total blocks in 2009. At the setting position, freshman Tricia Baczek has stepped into the role well, posting 108 assists over the Eagles' first 12 matches. Freshman outside hitter Jazmin Brown leads Coppin State with 63 digs.
New Hampshire (5-9, 0-0)
UNH is coming off a 3-1 win at Northeastern on Tuesday, September 22 in Boston, Mass. Senior middle blocker Lindsay Fogarty led the Wildcats with 14 kills and hit at a .462 clip against the Huskies. On the season, Fogarty ranks first on the team with 118 kills and is second on the Wildcats with 24 total blocks. Senior setter Kate Uitti has posted 388 assists on the year. She recorded the 3,000th assist of her career on September 19 vs. Arizona State.

What's Next?
After this weekend, Providence will travel to Brooklyn Heights, N.Y. for a rematch with St. Francis (N.Y.) on Wednesday, September 30 at 7:00 p.m. The Friars will play their home finale on Tuesday, October 6 at 7:00 p.m. against intra-state rival Bryant at 7:00 p.m. in Mullaney Gymnasium. Prior to the match, lone senior Abby Majewski (Sunderland, Mass.) will be honored for her contributions to the Friar volleyball program.
