PROVIDENCE, R.I. - The Providence College volleyball team (2-2) will travel to Poughkeepsie, N.Y. over the weekend to compete in the Volley in the Valley Tournament, hosted by Marist College. On Saturday, September 5, Providence will battle Bryant at 10:00 a.m. and Marist at 7:00 p.m. The Friars finish the tournament on Sunday, September 6 with an 11:00 a.m. contest against Bucknell.
The Friars are coming off a thrilling 3-2 victory at Holy Cross on Wednesday, September 2. Senior outside hitter Abby Majewski (Sunderland, Mass.) led the Providence offense with a career-high 17 kills against the Crusaders and now ranks first on the team with 38 kills in 2009.
Providence owned a sizable advantage in blocks, outperforming Holy Cross, 21-to-4. The Friars have out-blocked their opponents 53-to-28 in 2009 and have been a dominant presence at the net in the first four matches of the season.
PC also held a 14-to-10 advantage in service aces against the Crusaders. Sophomore middle blocker Lauren Fletcher (Syracuse, N.Y.) made significant contributions in those areas for Providence, posting nine total blocks and a career-high three service aces to go along with her eight kills.
Scouting the Competition
Bryant (0-3) The Friars open the Volley in the Valley against Bryant University. The Bulldogs went 0-3 at the Staybridge Suites Rocket Classic in Toledo, Ohio on August 28 and 29. Bryant dropped a 3-0 contest to Toledo on August 28 and fell to Kennesaw State, 3-1, and Marist, 3-0, on August 29. Coming off a 16-19 record in 2008, the Bulldogs return a core of five players from last season and are picked to finish sixth in the Northeast Conference. Sophomores Jazmin Stoner and Maria Scocca lead Bryant in 2009 with 26 kills each. Senior captain Julie Geonnotti ranks first on the Bulldogs with 61 assists and has recorded 18 digs on the year.
Marist (2-2) The Red Foxes are coming off a 3-1 victory over Hartford on Wednesday, September 2 in West Hartford, Conn. Marist is coming off its highest win total (13) since 2003 and was picked to finish fifth in the MAAC Preseason Poll. The team is led by junior Joanna Foss. The 6-1 outside hitter ranks first on the Red Foxes with 50 kills and is second on the squad with 42 digs. Senior setter Dawn Jan has notched 156 assists on the year.
Bucknell (2-1) Bucknell posted a 2-1 record at the St. Francis (N.Y.) Invitational on August 28 and 29 in New York, N.Y. The Bison defeated St. Peter's, 3-0, on August 28. On August 29, Bucknell earned a 3-2 victory over St. Francis (N.Y.) and fell to NJIT, 3-0. Picked to finish fourth in the Patriot League Preseason Poll, the Bison are led by junior outside hitter Kaitlin Segal. The 5-10 outside hitter ranks first on the team with 34 kills and is second on the squad with 32 digs.
What's Next? After the weekend tournament, the Friars make their home debut on Wednesday, September 2 against Brown in Mullaney Gymnasium at Alumni Hall. The match is scheduled for 7:30 p.m. and admission is free.
