PROVIDENCE, R.I. - The Providence College volleyball team will make its home debut against cross-town rival Brown University on Wednesday, September 9 at 7:30 p.m. in Mullaney Gymnasium at Alumni Hall. The Friars will look to improve on their 3-4 record against the Bears, who are playing their season opener.
The Friars are coming off a 3-1 victory over Bucknell in the team's final match of the Volley in the Valley Tournament, hosted by Marist College in Poughkeepsie, N.Y. Providence posted a 1-2 record in the tournament and finished tied for second place.
Against the Bison, sophomore Lauren Fletcher (Syracuse, N.Y.) led the Friars with a career-high 19 kills and hit at an impressive .429 clip. For her efforts, Fletcher was named to the Volley in the Valley All-Tournament Team and was an Independent Volleyball Player of the Week honorable mention. The 6-1 middle blocker ranks first on the Friars in kills (69) and total blocks (29) this season.
Sophomore setter Carly Morrison (Larkspur, Calif.) recorded her second double-double of the tournament against Bucknell, posting totals of 45 assists and 10 digs. Morrison is tied for first amongst Independent Volleyball student-athletes with 198 assists in 2009.
Scouting the Competition
Brown (0-0) The Bears are coming off a 12-14 record in 2008, including a 4-10 mark in Ivy League play. Offensively, Brown will be led by junior outside hitter/right side Megan Toman. The Newport Beach, Calif. native ranked second on the team in 2008 with 250 kills and averaged 3.01 kills per game. Sophomore defensive specialist Annika Gliottone finished second on the Bears in 2008 with 227 digs and will start as the team's libero this season.
What's Next? After the match against Brown, PC will compete in the Lafayette/Lehigh Crosstown Tournament. On Friday, September 11, the Friars will play Rider at 3:00 p.m. and Lehigh at 6:00 p.m. in Bethlehem, Pa. On Saturday, September 12, PC will square off against Lafayette at 10:00 a.m. and Niagara at 1:00 p.m. in Easton, Pa.
