Providence Volleyball Drops Four-Set Match To Binghamton

VESTAL, N.Y. - The Providence College volleyball team dropped a hard-fought four-set match (23-25, 11-25, 25-12, 23-25) to Binghamton on the road on Sunday, October 10. The Friars fall to 9-14 on the season, 1-3 in America East play. Binghamton improves to 7-11, 2-1 in the league.
The Friars were led by junior Lauren Fletcher (Syracuse, N.Y.), who notched 12 kills in the match. Classmate Lauren Hendel (Lloyd Harbor, N.Y.) added eight kills while freshman Anne Powers (La Selva Beach, Calif.) matched her career-high with seven kills.
The Providence defense was led by sophomore Cassie Muzzonigro (Gibsonia, Pa.), who collected 16 digs. Senior co-captains Emily Morris (Hermosa Beach, Calif.) and Kourtney Halliday (Bourne, Mass.) added nine and eight digs, respectively.
Binghamton was powered by Michelle McDonough, who racked up 22 kills while hitting at a .304 clip. Ann Lejina dded 10 kills for the Bearcats, while also recording seven digs. The Binghamton back row was led by 15 digs from Xiomara Ortiz.
Things were looking good for the Friars early in the first set, as they held a 23-18 lead when Binghamton took a time out. The break was able to help the Bearcats put together a rally, as they took seven-straight points, capturing the set, 25-23.
The second and third sets saw each team take a turn dominating the match. The second set saw the Bobcats cruise to a 25-11 win before the Friars got back in the match with a 25-12 win in the third.
The fourth set saw more dramatics, as Providence again held a late lead, at 23-18. A kill by Sandra Devito gave the Bearcats life, as they sent Devito to the service line and she would serve out the match. The Bearcat run to take the set, 25-23, included three kills by McDonough.
The Friars will look to rebound with a non-conference match this Wednesday, October 13, when they play host to Central Connecticut State at Mullaney Gymnasium. The match is set for 7:00 p.m.
