Box Score

The Providence College men's soccer team was defeated by Notre Dame, 2-1, Sunday afternoon in a BIG EAST Conference match at Alumni Stadium in Notre Dame, Ind. Steven Perry scored the game winner with 5:17 remaining in the second half to lead the Fighting Irish.

Notre Dame (4-2-3, 2-0 BIG EAST) struck first in the 12th minute when Jeb Brovsky netted his first goal of the season. After a cross from the right flank, the ball deflected high towards the top of the 18-yard box to Dillon Powers. Powers then headed the ball over the top to Brovsky, who headed the ball into the net from eight yards out.

Providence (5-3-1, 0-2 BIG EAST) scored the equalizer as it benefitted from an own goal. Senior Matt Marcin (Wilmington, Del.) played a direct free kick from the right side of the 18-yard box that was deflected back to Marcin. Marcin then played a cross that made its way into the back of the net off a Notre Dame player. The Fighting Irish nearly regained the lead in the 16th minute when Perry was in alone from 12 yards out, but his low right-footed shot just missed wide left. In the 19th minute, it was Providence which nearly took the lead when freshman Greg Davis (Jamaica, N.Y.) had a header from in close but the shot missed high. Davis was again involved in the 26th minute as Providence nearly scored. Sophomore Marc Cintron (Piscataway, N.J.) played a long cross from the right flank to the far post and Davis was able to slide and fire a right footed shot, but his attempt was saved by UND goalkeeper Phillip Tuttle.

The Friars, who controlled possession in the first half, finished with a 9-5 advantage in shots and a 6-1 edge in corner kicks in the first 45 minutes.

Early in the second half, Cintron drove a cross to sophomore Wilder Arboleda (Pawtucket, R.I.) who controlled the ball off his chest before firing a volley with his right foot that was saved by Tuttle at the near post. In the 69th minute, senior David Datilus (Linden, N.J.) gained possession of the ball at midfield, eluded a defender and fired a shot from 25 yards, but Tuttle was there again to make the stop.

Notre Dame put pressure on the Friars in the 75th minute and after a scramble inside the 18 yard box, Harrison Shipp fired a shot from the 12 yards out that was blocked and the rebound was also blocked near the goal line by senior Bryan Minogue (Miller Place, N.Y.). Seconds later, Klazura fired a shot from 18 yards out that was saved by Jhojan Obando (Kissimmee, Fla.). However, Perry sealed the win late in the match with his fifth goal of the season.

Providence finished with a 13-10 advantage in shots and a 10-5 edge in corner kicks.

The Friars are back in action on Wednesday, October 6 at 3:00 p.m. when they host Boston University.
