PROVIDENCE, R.I. - - The Providence College men's soccer team was defeated by Georgetown, 1-0, Saturday afternoon in a BIG EAST Conference match at Glay Field in Providence, R.I.
Georgetown (6-4-1, 2-1 BIG EAST) scored the only goal it would need with 2:08 remaining in the first half when Steven Neumann netted his fourth goal of the season. Jimmy Nealis played a ball from his left back position to Henry Tembon who flicked the ball ahead to Neumann at the top of the 18-yard box. Neumann then calmly slotted the ball into the lower left corner of the net.
Providence (5-4-1, 0-3 BIG EAST) put more pressure on the Hoyas in the second half, but could not score the equalizer. The Friars outshot the Hoyas, 9-3, in the final 45 minutes and had an 8-1 advantage in corner kicks. Seniors Andrew Sousa (Fall River, Mass.) and Matt Marcin (Wilmington, Del.) each had direct free kicks from 20 yards out, but their attempts were blocked by the defensive wall. In the 77th minute, junior John Raley (St. Inigoes, Md.) ripped a shot from 25 yards out that took a deflection off a Georgetown player and just missed over the cross bar for a corner kick.
Matthew Brutto made four saves in goal to earn the shutout for the Hoyas, while red-shirt junior Jhojan Obando (Kissimmee, Fla.) stopped three shots for PC.
The Friars are back in action on Wednesday, October 13 at 3:00 p.m. when they host second-ranked Connecticut at 3:00 p.m. at Glay Field. The game will be televised by Cox Sports and aired via tape delay on Thursday, October 14 at 8:00 p.m.
