PROVIDENCE, R.I. - The Providence College volleyball team (8-12, 1-1 America East) will take a break from league play to host Rhode Island (11-4, 2-1 Atlantic 10) on Tuesday, October 5. The match is set for 7:00 p.m. and will be televised locally on Cox Sports (Ch. 3) via tape delay on Wednesday, October 6 at 8:00 p.m. and Saturday, October 9 at 8:00 p.m.
The Friars are coming off their first-ever America East win, a sweep over Hartford at home on Sunday, October 3. Rhode Island enters the match following a 3-1 loss to Xavier.
Providence is led by junior Lauren Fletcher (Syracuse, N.Y.), who is averaging 3.70 kills per set, while hitting at a .319 clip. Both numbers place her second in the league. Bolstering the attack are classmates Lauren Hendel (Lloyd Harbor, N.Y.) and Shelagh Dolan (Westford, Mass.), who are averaging 1.98 and 1.77 kills per set, respectively.
The attack is started by junior setter Carly Morrison (Larkspur, Calif.), who is averaging 7.59 assists per set. She racked up 31 assists in the win over Hartford, a season-high for a three-set match, while adding seven digs, three kills, a pair of blocks and an ace. Defensively, sophomore Cassie Muzzonigro (Gibsonia, Pa.) leads the way, recording and average of 3.75 digs per set. Senior co-captain Emily Morris (Hermosa Beach, Calif.) also bolsters the back row, posting 2.92 digs per set.
The Opposition
University of Rhode Island (11-4, 2-1 Atlantic 10) The Rams travel to Providence coming off a pair of losses in the Buckeye State, falling to A-10 foes Dayton and Xavier.
The Rams have a solid attack, with four players averaging better than 2.00 kills per set. Freshman Britta Baarstad leads the way (2.65 kills per set), followed by sophomore Rachel Zarazan (2.54), senior Lauren McIntosh (2.27) and junior Kayla Wilson (2.04). Sophomore Annie Nelson sets up the attack and is averaging 9.44 assists per set. Defensively, sophomore Ashley Tennant leads the team with 3.10 digs per set.
The Rams and Friars have had four common opponents thus far. Both quads defeated Holy Cross. Rhode Island has scored wins over Brown, Stony Brook and Quinnipiac, all teams that defeated Providence. Rhode Island is 2-0 against the America East, with wins over Stony Brook and New Hampshire. Rhode Island is the only Atlantic 10 school the Friars play during 2010.
On-Deck
The Friars hit the road in America East play for the first time this weekend, October 8-10. On Friday, October 8, Providence travels to Albany for a 7:00 p.m. match. The Friars then head to Binghamton for a 2:00 p.m. showdown on Sunday, October 10.
