Friar Volleyball Drops Season Finale to UMBC

BALTIMORE, Md. - The Providence College volleyball team dropped its final match of the 2010 campaign, falling to UMBC in straight sets (9-25, 17-25, 17-25) in an America East match in Baltimore, Md. The Friars conclude the season at 10-23, 2-10 in the league. UMBC finishes the regular season 10-16, 6-5 in league play.

The Friars were led by junior Shelagh Dolan (Westford, Mass.), who notched eight kills. Classmates Carly Morrison (Larkspur, Calif.) and Lauren Hendel (Lloyd Harbor, N.Y.) added five and four kills, respectively. The setting duties were shared by freshman Anne Powers (La Selva Beach, Calif.) and Morrison. Powers recorded 10 assists while Morrison added eight. Sophomore libero Cassie Muzzonigro (Gibsonia, Pa.) led the defense with eight digs.

UMBC was led by Ali Goc, who notched nine kills. Ali Loynachan and Sabrina Hoeks each added seven kills for the Retrievers. UMBC setter Alexandria Spaay had a solid match, picking up 33 assists. Hoeks led the defense with 14 digs, while Hallie Carter added 10 digs.

UMBC had a phenomenal first set, hitting at a blistering .524 clip, while not making a single attack error and notching 11 kills en route to a 25-9 win. In the second, the Retrievers continued the impressive attack, this time hitting at a .333 clip and taking the set 25-17. The third set saw the Friar attack play a little better, but it wasn't enough as the Retrievers took the set 25-17.

The 2010 season, Providence's first in the America East, closes with a 10-23 record. The Friars lose three seniors to graduation: Emily Morris (Hermosa Beach, Calif.), Kourney Halliday (Bourne, Mass.) and Sondra Snyder (Norwood, N.J.). The squad will return some of its top players in 2011. Junior Lauren Fletcher (Syracuse, N.Y.) led the squad in kills this season (3.69 per set), while classmate Morrison was the top setter (7.55 assists per set) and Muzzonigro was the top back row player (3.95 digs per set).
