Men's Soccer Earns At-Large Bid To NCAA Tournament

It was announced on Monday, November 15 that the Providence College men's soccer squad was one of 48 teams selected to participate in the 2010 NCAA Tournament. The Friars will play St. Peter's on Thursday, November 18 at 1:00 p.m. in the first-ever NCAA Tournament match at Providence's Glay Field. It also will mark the first-ever meeting between the two schools.

The Providence team and over 100 supporters of the program turned out to watch the Selection Show at McPhail's on the Providence College campus.

Providence College was one of 26 at-large teams selected for the Tournament. It marks fifth NCAA Tournament all-time for the Friars and the first since 2007. In addition, Providence has earned an NCAA Tournament berth four times in the last six years under Head Coach .

Providence (12-5-3) is on a nine-game unbeaten streak (7-0-2), including a 3-0-1 mark in the BIG EAST Championship. The Friars recorded seven consecutive wins and advanced to the BIG EAST Championship match after defeating Cincinnati, 2-1, in the semifinals on Friday, November 12 at Red Bull Arena. In the final on Sunday, November 14, Providence tied No. 1 Louisville, 1-1, in double overtime, but the Cardinals earned the title with a 3-2 shootout win. It marked the second time ever that PC played in the BIG EAST final (1984 was the other). Seniors Matt Marcin (Wilmington, Del.), Bryan Minogue (Miller Place, N.Y.) and Andrew Sousa (Fall River, Mass.) as well as red-shirt junior Jhojan Obando (Kissimmee, Fla.) were named to the BIG EAST All-Tournament Team.

Providence is led offensively by midfielder Matt Marcin. Marcin, who also was named to the All-BIG EAST First Team, ranks first on the team with a career-high eight goals and 19 points. Sophomore Marc Cintron (Piscataway, N.J.) ranks second with a career-high 14 points, including a team-best 10 assists, two shy of tying a school mark. In goal, Jhojan Obando has started all 20 matches and has a 0.96 goals against average and a .829 save percentage. He also has six shutouts.

St. Peter's (13-5-1) is making its third NCAA Tournament appearance and the first since 2007. The Peacocks are coming off a 2-1 victory over Iona in the MAAC Championship match on Sunday, November 14 in Baltimore, Md. Mauricio Jimenez's goal in the 60th minute gave the Peacocks a 2-0 lead and it proved to be the match winner. It marked St. Peter's second MAAC Tournament title. Lebo Pila was named the Tournament's Most Valuable Player. Harry Newman (eight goals, six assists) and Lebo (seven goals, eight assists) are tied for the team lead with 22 points each. Carlos Suarez and Tyler Clarkhaut have split time in net for the Peacocks and have combined for a 1.01 goals against average and a .794 save percentage.

Providence is one of seven BIG EAST Conference schools to make the NCAA Tournament. Louisville earned an automatic berth and is the No. 1 overall seed, while Connecticut, Georgetown, Notre Dame, South Florida and West Virginia earned at-large berths.
