FRIARS RETURN TO CONFERENCE PLAY AGAINST NORTHEASTERN... After playing two non-conference games last weekend, the Friars will return to Hockey East action when they play a home-and-home series against the Northeastern Huskies, beginning on Friday, November 20 at Schneider Arena.
FRIARS LOOKING TO EXTEND UNBEATEN STREAK... Providence College's current six-game unbeaten streak (4-0-2) is its longest since the 2005-06 season when the Friars recorded a six-game winning streak. During the four-game unbeaten streak, PC has outscored opponents, 18-11. Senior Ian O'Connor (Londonderry, N.H.) has led the way in the last six games with three goals and five assists for eight points. In goal, junior Alex Beaudry (Cumberland, Ontario) has a 1.94 goals against average and a .936 save percentage in five of the six games.
SERIES HISTORY VERSUS NORTHEASTERN... In 138 all-time meetings between the two teams, Providence leads, 76-49-13, including a 38-20-7 mark in Providence. The Friars defeated the Huskies, 3-2, on October 8 in the first game of the season. It marked PC's first win over NU since January 26, 2008.
SCOUTING THE HUSKIES... Northeastern is coming off a pair of 4-2 setbacks at No. 5 Maine last weekend. The Huskies held 1-0 and 2-1 leads, but each time the Black Bears rallied. Wade MacLeod and Tyler McNeely led the team with one goal and two assists each, while goaltender Chris Rawlings totaled 66 saves in the two games. MacLeod (4 g, 3 a) and McNeely (3 g, 4 a) are tied for the team lead with seven points each. Rawlings has played in nine games and has a 2.63 goals against average and a .923 save percentage.
FRIAR QUICK NOTES... • The last time Providence had a seven-game unbeaten streak was during the 2002-03 season. • The Friars recorded a season-high 45 shots against Alabama-Huntsville on November 12. • Providence won its first two road games of the season over the weekend to improve to 2-4-1 away from Schneider Arena. • Senior Kyle MacKinnon (Walnut, Calif.) scored his second-career hat trick on Friday, marking his seventh career multiple-point game. • Sophomore Tim Schaller (Merrimack, N.H.) scored a short-handed goal on Saturday marking the first short-handed goal by Providence since October 25, 2008. • Senior Eric Baier (North Kingstown, R.I.) is the first Friar defenseman to score a goal this season (11/13 at Alabama-Huntsville). • Twelve different Providence College players have scored at least one goal this season, including nine Friars who have two goals or more. • The Friars were named Hockey East Team of the Week on Monday for the second time in three weeks.
HOME SWEET HOME... Providence is 3-0-1 at Schneider Arena this season. The Friars defeated Northeastern, 3-2, in the season opener at home on October 8 before going on a five-game road trip. The Friars then posted home wins over UMass (3-2 on 10/30) and Merrimack (2-0 on 11/5) before skating to a 3-3 overtime tie against Vermont (11/6).
FRIARS TAKE TWO AT ALABAMA-HUNTSVILLE... The Friars defeated Alabama-Huntsville, 3-1, at the Von Braun Center in Huntsville, Ala. on Saturday, November 12. Kyle MacKinnon tallied three goals, while senior Ian O'Connor totaled a career-high three assists and classmate Ben Farrer (Calgary, Alberta) finished with a career-best two assists. In goal, junior Justin Gates (Cranston, R.I.) made 23 stops in his first start this season. The following night, the Friars defeated the Chargers, 4-2. Seniors Matt Germain (Rockland, Mass.), Eric Baier, sophomore Tim Schaller and junior Matt Bergland (Faribault, Minn.) each scored for PC. Germain was a factor in every goal as he finished with a career-high four points (one goal, three assists), while junior Alex Beaudry had 24 stops.
MacKINNON LEADING IN GOALS... Kyle MacKinnon leads the Friars in scoring with eight goals and is tied for first with 10 points. He has two multiple-goal games, including a three goals against Alabama-Huntsville on November 12. Last season, MacKinnon did not score his eighth goal until the 20th game and this season he has at least one goal in five of the 11 games. In 34 games last season, MacKinnon finished tied for the team lead with 12 goals and led all Friars with 25 points.
PROVIDENCE NON-CONFERENCE SCHEDULE... PC's seven-game non-conference schedule features two games at WCHA power Minnesota Duluth (10/15 and 10/16) and two contests at Alabama-Huntsville (11/12 and 1/13). In addition, Providence also will face Atlantic Hockey foe Holy Cross (11/27) and ECAC opponents Brown (12/7) and Quinnipiac (12/11). PC posted a 5-2 record in non-conference games last season, including a 3-1 mark against teams from the CCHA. PC also defeated Brown and Holy Cross. The 5-2 mark was the best non-conference record since the 2003-04 season when PC finished with a 9-3-1 mark.
FRIAR ALUMNI UPDATE... Three Providence College alumni are currently playing in the NHL. Fernando Pisani '00 is playing for the Chicago Blackhawks after signing with the Stanley Cup champions this past summer. Hal Gill '97, who helped the Pittsburgh Penguins to the 2009 Stanley Cup title, is an assistant captain with the Montreal Canadiens. In addition, Matt Taormina '09 played in his first NHL game on October 8 for the New Jersey Devils. The undrafted defenseman scored his first-career NHL goal and added one assist on October 15. He is currently the second top scoring defenseman on the Devils with three goals and two assists for five points. There also are two former Friars who were part of the U.S.A. men's hockey team which captured the silver medal at the 2010 Vancouver Olympics. Brian Burke '77, who is the general manager of the Toronto Maple Leafs, served as the general manager of Team U.S.A. Ron Wilson '77, the head coach of the Maple Leafs, was the head coach of the Americans. Lou Lamoriello '63, former student-athlete, head coach and athletic director at PC, is the current President and General Manager of the New Jersey Devils. He was inducted into the Hockey Hall of Fame on November 9.
