Friar Volleyball Set For Final Regular Season Home Games

PROVIDENCE, R.I. - The Providence College volleyball team (10-20, 2-7) hosts its final two home games of the 2010 campaign this weekend. The Friars host Binghamton on Friday, November 5, before hosting Albany on Saturday, November 6, for senior day. The match with Binghamton will start at 7:00 p.m., while the showdown with the conference-leading Great Danes will begin at 5:00 p.m.

The Friars are led by junior Lauren Fletcher (Syracuse, N.Y.), who tops the league in points (4.69). Fletcher also leads the league in blocks (1.17 per set), is second in hitting percentage (.332), third in kills (3.29 per set) and eighth in service aces (0.30 per set). The attack is started by junior setter Carly Morrison (Larkspur, Calif.), who is averaging 7.82 assists per set.

The top back row player for Providence is sophomore Cassie Muzzonigro (Gibsnoia, Pa.), who is third in the league with 3.98 digs per set. Also contributing in the back row are Morrison and senior co-captain Emily Morris (Hermosa Beach, Calif.), who are averaging 1.80 and 2.90 digs per set, respectively.

The Opposition
Binghamton University Bearcats (10-13, 5-3 America East) Binghamton comes to Providence having lost a pair of league matches to UMBC and Albany. The Bearcats are looking to defend their 2009 America East title and currently sit in second place in the league, one game behind the Great Danes.

The Bearcats are led by senior captain Michelle McDonough, who leads America East in kills with 3.92 per set. Senior Anna Lejina is fourth in the league with 3.69 kills per set. The Bearcats boast the top setter in the league, junior Julie Chambers, who is averaging 9.79 assists per set. They also feature one of the top defenders in the league, as freshman Xiomara Ortiz ranks second in digs per set with 4.17.

Providence and Binghamton met in Vestal, N.Y., on October 10. The Bearcats took the match in four sets (23-25, 11-25, 25-12, 23-25). The Bearcats were led by 22 kills from McDonough, while Fletcher led the way for the Friars with 12 kills.

University at Albany Great Danes (16-7, 6-2 America East) The Great Danes enter this weekend having won their last two conference matches over Binghamton and UMBC. The Great Danes will visit New Hampshire on Friday, November 5, before coming to Providence. Albany currently sits in first place in America East.

Albany is led by junior Casey Wright, who leads the league in hitting percentage at .344. Wright also is fifth in kills at 3.50 per set. Sophomore Casey Vandegrift and senior Teresa Coppiellie also are among the leaders in hitting percentage, at .251 and .215, respectively. The Great Dane attack is started by freshman Kaley Jacobson, who ranks fifth in the conference with 8.54 assists per set.

The Friars and Great Danes met in Albany, N.Y., on October 8. Albany took the match in straight-sets (20-25, 21-25, 10-25), behind 15 kills each from Coppiellie and Dunja Prgomet. Fletcher led the Friars with 10 kills.

On-Deck
After the weekend, the Friars have one match remaining in the regular season, as they will travel to Baltimore, Md., to take on UMBC. The match is scheduled for 11:00 a.m. on Sunday, November 14.
