PROVIDENCE, R.I. - The Providence College volleyball team dropped a three-set match to Binghamton on Friday night at Mullaney Gymnasium. The Bearcats took the conference match by scores of 25-18, 25-17 and 25-19. Providence falls to 10-21 on the season, 2-8 in America East play. Binghamton improves to 11-13, 6-3 in league action.
Providence had one of its most balanced attacks of the season. Juniors Shelagh Dolan (Westford, Mass.) and Lauren Hendel (Lloyd Harbor, N.Y.), along with freshman Anne Powers (La Selva Beach, Calif.), all recorded six kills apiece for the match. In addition, junior Carly Morrison (Larkspur, Calif.) and freshman Emily Hall (Canal Winchester, Ohio), each picked up four kills. Morrison and Powers split the setter's duties, as Morrison picked up 15 assists and Powers added nine.
The Providence defense was led by sophomore libero Cassie Muzzonigro (Gibsonia, Pa.), who picked up 11 digs. Senior co-captain Emily Morris (Hermosa Beach, Calif.) added nine digs.
Binghamton was led by the combination of Anna Lejina and Michelle McDonough, who notched 14 and 12 kills, respectively. Alex Roland added seven kills for the Bearcats. Setter Julie Chambers had a solid match, picking up 35 assists. The top defender for Binghamton was libero Xiomara Ortiz, who picked up 14 digs. McDonough added eight digs.
Binghamton played well from the start of the match. The Bearcats never trailed in the first set, riding a .324 team hitting percentage to a 25-18 win. Lejina had an impressive first set, recording eight kills, while Hendel picked up four for the Friars.
The second set saw Binghamton trail only once, while hitting at an impressive .371 clip, en route to a 25-17 win. This time Binghamton used a balanced attack, as five players registered multiple kills in the frame. Powers had one of her most complete sets of her rookie season, picking up three kills, three digs and a pair of assists.
The final set was a similar story, as Binghamton hit .312 for the frame, compared to Providence's .200 hitting percentage. McDonough notched six kills for the Bearcats, while Iva Partaleva added three. Powers, Hendel and Dolan picked up two kills each for Providence. Binghamton took the final set, 25-19, and the match, 3-0.
The Friars return to the court at Mullaney Gymnasium tomorrow, November 6, when they host UMBC. The match marks Providence's final home contest of the season and will begin at 5:00 p.m. Prior to the match, the team will honor its three seniors: Morris, Kourtney Halliday (Bourne, Mass.) and Sondra Snyder (Norwood, N.J.).
