PROVIDENCE, R.I. - The Providence College volleyball team dropped its final home match of the 2010 season on Saturday evening, falling to Albany in three sets (18-25, 12-25, 14-25) at Mullaney Gymnasium. The Friars fall to 10-22 on the season, 2-9 in America East play. Albany improves to 18-7, 8-2 in America East play.
Providence was led by junior Lauren Hendel (Lloyd Harbor, N.Y.), who posted 10 kills on the match. The Friars also had a strong performance from junior Shelagh Dolan (Westford, Mass.), who added seven kills. Junior setter Calry Morrison (Larkspur, Calif.) recorded 15 assists. The Friar backrow was led by sophomore libero Cassie Muzzonigro (Gibsonia, Pa.) and senior co-captain Emily Morris (Hermosa Beach Calif.), who picked up 13 and 11 digs, respectively.
Albany was led by Teresa Coppiellie, who notched a match-high 14 kills. Casey Wright picked up 11 kills, while Dujna Prgomet added eight for the Great Danes. The Albany setter, Abbey Wexel, assisted on 35 of the 38 kills for the match. The Great Dane back row was led by libero Laurie Gonzalez. She had a match-high 17 digs.
The Great Danes rode a .255 hitting percentage to the win, outhitting Providence in all three sets. The first set was the closest of the match, despite 17 kills by Albany. The Great Danes took the set, 25-18. The second set saw Albany hit .273, while the Friar attack struggled, committing eight errors in the frame, dropping the set 25-18. The third set was the same, this time with Albany hitting .333 and taking advantage of six Providence errors, en route to a 25-14 win.
The match marked the final home game for the team's three seniors: Morris, Kourtney Halliday (Bourne, Mass.) and Sondra Snyder (Norwood, N.J.). Halliday recorded 11 digs in the match, while Snyder picked up three digs.
The Friars have one match left in the regular-season, as they will visit UMBC in league play next Sunday, November 14. The season-finale is set for 11:00 a.m.
