DURHAM, N.H. - The Providence College men's hockey team was defeated by No. 15 UNH, 5-2, Friday night in a Hockey East game played the Whittemore Center in Durham, N.H. UNH's Bobby Butler scored four goals including a hat trick in the third period.

UNH (14-10-4, 13-5-3 Hockey East) took a 1-0 lead at 4:01 of the first period when Butler's shot from the high slot took a deflection in front and found its way into the net. The Wildcats were on the verge of adding to their lead just over four minutes later when they had a two-man advantage, but PC was able to thwart the power play. Providence (9-17-2, 4-15-2) scored the equalizer at 17:46 when sophomore Andy Balysky (Randolph, N.J.) recorded his first goal of the season. Classmate Robert Maloney (Eagan, Minn.) took the puck down the right wing before sliding it across to Balysky who tapped the puck into the net. Senior Mark Fayne (Sagamore Beach, Mass.) also assisted on the goal.

The Wildcats took a 2-1 lead at 13:53 of the second period when Peter LeBlanc pounced on a rebound in front and netted his 11th goal of the season. The Friars responded 1:05 later when as senior John Cavanagh (Warwick, R.I.) collected his third goal of the season. Sophomore Matt Bergland (Faribault, Minn.) gained possession of the puck at the right circle before playing a pass through the crease to John Cavanagh who re-directed the puck into the net at 14:58.

Paul Thompson nearly gave UNH the lead at 5:58, but his shot from the slot hit the left post while the Wildcats were on the power play. The Friars killed off all five UNH power-play opportunities. However, the Wildcats broke the tie at 9:04 when Phil DeSimone played a long pass from his own red line to a streaking Butler at PC blue line. Butler skated on a breakaway before tucking the puck past PC goalie Alex Beaudry (Cumberland, Ont.). Butler made the score 4-2 with his third of the night at 17:21 and added an empty-net goal at 19:12 to complete the scoring for his team leading 22nd goal of the season.

Beaudry finished with 29 saves for the Friars, while Brian Foster stopped 27 for the Wildcats.
