Box Score

PROVIDENCE, R.I. - Sophomore Wilder Arboleda (Pawtucket, R.I.) scored two goals to lead the Providence College men's soccer team to a 3-1 victory over Sacred Heart Wednesday afternoon in a non-conference match played at Glay Field. With the win, Providence improves to 2-1-1, while Sacred Heart suffers its first defeat and is now 4-1.

Arboleda, who was making his first career start, needed only 3:08 to score his first collegiate goal and give the Friars an early 1-0 lead. Sophomore Marc Cintron (Piscataway, N.J.) flicked a pass to senior Matt Marcin (Wilmington, Del.), who then played the ball to his left to Arboleda at the top of the 18-yard box. Arboleda ran onto the ball and ripped a right-footed shot into the upper right corner of the net.

The Friars doubled their lead early in the second half when Cintron netted his first goal of the season. Senior David Datilus (Linden, N.J.) played a cross from the right side to Cintron, who headed the ball into the right corner of the net from eight yards out at 51:24. It marked Datilus' first career assist. However, the Pioneers responded 2:15 later when Providence was whistled for a foul inside the 18-yard box resulting in a penalty kick. Mario Mililli stepped up to the penalty spot and placed the ball into the right corner of the net. Providence goalkeeper Jhojan Obando (Kissimmee, Fla.) guessed correctly and was able to get his left hand on the ball, but it wasn't enough to keep it out of the net.

With just under two minutes to play, the Pioneers had consecutive corner kicks, which resulted in two shots, but Obando stopped both attempts. Obando then drove a long punt down field and Arboleda, who had just re-entered the game, was able to steal the ball away from an SHU defender near the left corner flag. Arboleda then maneuvered his away around SHU goalkeeper Alex Fait before placing the ball into the open net from 12 yards out with 50 seconds remaining.

Providence finished with a 14-6 edge in shots. Obando totalled three saves, while Fait had two stops.

Providence is back in action on Saturday, September 18 when it hosts Quinnipiac at 2:00 p.m.
