PROVIDENCE, R.I. - Sophomore Wilder Arboleda (Pawtucket, R.I.) scored the lone goal of the match in the second half as the Providence College men's soccer team defeated Quinnipiac University, 1-0, Saturday afternoon in a non-conference match at Glay Field. With the victory, the Friars improved to 3-1-1, while the Bobcats are now 0-4.
The goal came in the 63rd minute when freshman Anthony Baumann (Spring Hill, Fla.) took a pass down the right flank and drove a low cross to Arboleda, who was 10 yards away from goal. Arboleda volleyed the ball with his right foot and into the lower left corner of the net past the diving Josh Lavallee. Arboleda, who also had two goals in Wednesday's victory over Sacred Heart, now leads the team in scoring with three goals. Quinnipiac nearly scored the equalizer minutes later when Tolle Staffanson had an open header from 10 yards out, but his shot when over the cross bar.
The Bobcats carried the play in the first half and had several scoring opportunities, but Providence goalkeeper Jhojan Obando (Kissimmee, Fla.) made several diving saves to keep the game scoreless. Phillip Suprise, who finished with eight of his team's 13 shots, nearly gave Quinnipiac the lead when his shot from 20 yards out was pushed aside by Obando with a diving effort in the 13th minute. Ten minutes later, Pierre Soubrier fired a shot from 25 yards out, but Obando was there again. Suprise had another scoring chance in the 33rd minute when he raced past the Friar defense and had a partial breakaway, but Obando came off his line to make the third of his four stops.
In the second half, the Friars created more scoring opportunities. Just three minutes in, senior Matt Marcin (Wilmington, Del.) ripped a low right-footed shot from 18 yards out, but Lavallee made a diving save to his right and out for a corner kick. On the ensuing corner kick, junior Daniel Fabian (Southbury, Conn.) had a shot from 10 yards out but his right-footed attempt missed high. In the 53rd minute, Fabian played a cross to sophomore Marc Cintron (Piscataway, N.J.), who had a free header from eight yards out, but Lavallee was there again to make a leaping stop as he pushed the ball over the cross bar.
Providence finished with a 14-13 edge in shots, including 10-7 in the second half. Obando totalled four saves to earn his second career shutout, while Lavallee had five stops.
Providence is back in action on Tuesday, September 21 when it travels to Boston, Mass. to take on Northeastern at 6:00 p.m.
