HAMDEN, CONN. - The Providence College volleyball team matched its season-high for consecutive wins, capturing its third-straight match at Quinnipiac (21-25, 25-19, 25-21, 25-17) on Wednesday in Hamden, Conn. The Friars improve to 7-10 on the season, while Quinnipiac falls to 2-11. Providence has won six-of-eight matches.
The Friars were led by a pair of juniors, as Lauren Fletcher (Syracuse, N.Y.) posted 15 kills, while Shelagh Dolan (Westford, Mass.) notched 11 kills. Senior co-captain Emily Morris (Hermosa Beach, Calif.) added seven kills while picking up 16 digs. Sophomore Cassie Muzzonigro (Gibsonia, Pa.) led the back row with 23 digs, just three shy of her season-high. Junior setter Carly Morrison (Larkspur, Calif.) was as reliable as always, recording 35 assists.
The Bobcats were led by Stephanie Biediger, who notched 13 kills. Logan Riker led the Quinnipiac defense with 18 digs, while setter Kayla Lawler picked up 30 assists.
The first set started out as a battle of runs, as Quinnipiac's Kayla Lawler notched an ace to start the match and the Bobcats were up 4-0 from the start. The Friars hung tough, as Morrison came to the service line with Providence down 5-3 and rattled off six straight to put her squad up 9-5. The set would remain tight, featuring seven ties and a couple of lead changes, but in the end Providence could not overcome a .121 hitting percentage and fell, 25-22.
From the second set on, Margot Royer-Johnson's squad was up to the task. Providence jumped out to an early 10-2 lead in the second, keyed by a pair of kills from Fletcher and aces from junior Lauren Hendel (Lloyd Harbor, N.Y.) and Morrison. The Bobcats would not go quietly, however, as Amanda Armstrong made 10-straight serves to get her team back within two, at 19-17. The stretch was keyed by four kills from Biediger. The Friars relied on the senior leadership of Morris at the end, as she notched two kills including the set-winner and Providence took the set, 25-19.
The third set saw the Friars again jump out to a lead before the Bobcats fought back. Providence led 13-5, keyed by two kills and an ace from Fletcher, before Quinnipiac got within one, 14-13, on an ace by Ashely Kopacki. While the Bobcats tied it once, they were never able to regain the lead on the set and a pair of kills by Hendel helped seal the set, 25-21.
Providence again played well at the start of the fourth frame, taking a 14-5 lead behind the service games of Morrison and Fletcher. While Armstrong made an impressive run to pull the Bobcats within nine, a block by Fletcher and Morris sealed the set, 25-17, and the match, 3-1.
The Friars take the weekend off before returning to the court on Tuesday, September 28, when they travel to Hanover, N.H., for a 7:00 p.m. match with Dartmouth. Providence returns home on Friday, October 1, for a 6:00 p.m. showdown with Stony Brook that marks the program's first-ever America East match.
