CAMBRIDGE, Mass. - The Providence College men's soccer team scored twice in the first half and held off Harvard, 2-1, Wednesday night in a non-conference match played at Soldiers Field Soccer Stadium in Cambridge, Mass. With the victory, the Friars improved to 5-2-1, while the Crimson fell to 2-3-3. It marked Providence's first win over Harvard since September 12, 1999.
"To find a way to win on the road is always an accomplishment, especially against a team like Harvard," Head Coach Chaka Daley said. "It was a competitive, physical, fast-paced game, but we ended up on the right side."
Sophomore Keith Jecewiz (Smithtown, N.Y.) scored his first career goal to give the Friars a 1-0 lead in the 36th minute as classmate Marc Cintron (Piscataway, N.J.) assisted on the goal. After a scrum inside the 18-yard box, Cintron played the ball to Jecewiz, who turned before firing a shot into the lower right corner of the net.
The Friars doubled their lead with two seconds remaining in the first half when senior Matt Marcin (Wilmington, Del.) connected on his third goal of the season. Providence put together a string of passes and the ball was played down the right side to Jecewiz. Jecewiz then drove a cross to Marcin who fired a shot with the inside of his right foot and into roof of the net from 12 yards out. It marked the third consecutive match in which Marcin has scored a goal.
The Crimson wasted little time cutting the Friars' lead to 2-1 as Jamie Rees scored 1:55 into the second half. However, the Friars thwarted Harvard's chances the rest of the way to earn their second consecutive road victory. Red-shirt junior goalkeeper Jhojan Obando (Kissimmee, Fla.) made five saves for Providence, including three in the first half to keep the Crimson scoreless. Harvard's Austin Harms stopped two shots.
"It was a very spirited performance by the boys and we just fought our way to victory," Daley added.
The Friars are back in action on Sunday, October 3 when they face Notre Dame at 2:30 p.m. in a BIG EAST Conference match. The game will be televised live on CBS College Sports.
