The Providence College men's and women's swimming teams kicked off the BIG EAST Championships at the University of Louisville's Ralph R. Wright Natatorium on Wednesday. Both teams competed in the 800y freestyle and 200y medley relay events.
In the men's 800y freestyle relay, sophomore Eric Burtchell (Pawtucket, R.I.), freshman Andrew St. Pierre (Fairhaven, Mass.), junior Collin Casciano (Hewitt, N.J.) and freshman Kenny Savage (Basking Ridge, N.J.) teamed up and finished in 7:08.08. With the time, the foursome shaved 12 full seconds off their qualifying time of 7:20.57. In the 200y medley relay, freshman Michael Luiz (New Bedford, Mass.) joined St. Pierre, Casciano and Savage to finish 10th with a time of 1:38.15.
On the women's side, freshmen Kathleen Degnan (Narragansett, R.I.), Julia Rivera (Rockville, Md.), Kelly Hall (Morristown, N.J.) and sophomore Erin Nanna (Westwood, Mass.) finished 10th in the 200y medley relay. The underclassmen were just three seconds behind ninth-place Georgetown. The women were disqualified in the 800y freestyle relay due to an early take-off in the relay exchange.
