Louisville, Ky. -

The Providence College men's and women's swimming teams continued to compete at the BIG EAST Championships at the University of Louisville's Ralph R. Wright Natatorium on Thursday. The second day of the four-day event featured the 500y free, 200y IM and 50y free events.

In the preliminary round, the top-eight finishers in each event qualified for their respective finals later in the night.

In the women's 500y free, senior co-captain Courtney Larcom (Morristown, N.J.) paced the Friars with a time of 5:13.59 (34th out of 40). Fellow senior co-captain Alexis Fatigati (New Milford, N.J.) and sophomore Nicole Monanian (Manahawkin, N.J.) rounded out the Friar effort with times of 5:16.15 and 5:17.55, respectively. Freshman Kelly Hall (Morristown, N.J.) made her individual debut at The Championships in the 200y IM, posting a time of 2:13.76. The Friars had a school record six women compete in the preliminary round of the 50y free. Freshman Jillian Mullany (Monroe, Conn.) led the team, as she posted a time of 24.85 (40th out of 63). Mullany's time is the fastest of the 2010-11 Friar season.

On the men's side, sophomore Eric Burtchell (Pawtucket, R.I.) overcame a slow start in the butterfly leg to finish in 1:59.65 (35th out of 40). Sophomore Christopher Morales (Ridgewood, N.J.) rounded out the field with his time of 2:02.80.

In the night time session, the men and women competed in their respective 200y free relay. Sophomore Sam Schlich (Massepequa, N.Y.), freshman Samantha DeGroff (Berlin, Conn.), Mullany and sophomore Erin Nanna (Westwood, Mass.) shaved nearly seven seconds off their qualifying time to beat out Seton Hall and finish in 10th. Their time of 1:37.92 marked the fastest time of the year for the Friar women in the 200y free relay.

The Friars will compete in day three of the BIG EAST Championships today, Friday, February 18. For a complete schedule of events please click here. For live streaming video of the Championships please click here.
