The Providence College men's and women's swimming teams competed in the 400y IM, 100y fly, 200y free, 100y breast and 100y back preliminary trials at the BIG EAST Championships at the University of Louisville's Ralph R. Wright Natatorium on Friday morning. The finals were held last night.
Junior Collin Casciano (Hewitt, N.J.) bested his own season-best time in the 100y fly, as he touched in 51.91. Casciano finished in 23rd place (out of 37), less than two seconds behind the time needed to qualify for the finals (49.62). In the 100y breast, freshman Andy St. Pierre (Fairhaven, Mass.) finished 23rd (59.62) out of 29 swimmers and shaved almost half-a-second off his personal best.
Sophomore Nicole Monanian (Manahawkin, N.J.) continued her strong performance at the meet, as she posted a time of 1:07.45 in the 100y breast. Freshman Julia Rivera (Rockville, Md.) finished close behind Monanian with a time of 1:08.10. Rhode Island native Kathleen Degnan (Narragansett, R.I.) led a troupe of Friar freshmen in the 100y backstroke (59.50). Freshmen Jillian Mullany (Monroe, Conn.), Meghan Condon (Stratford, Conn.), Samantha DeGroff (Berlin, Conn.), Jessica Havard (Atlantic Highlands, N.J.) and Kimberly Hall (Morristown, N.J.) also exhibited encouraging swims in the event.
