LOWELL, Mass. - The Providence College men's hockey team was defeated by UMass Lowell, 7-2, Saturday night in a Hockey East game played at the Tsongas Center in Lowell, Mass. Riley Wetmore and David Vallorani each scored twice for the River Hawks (5-24-3, 4-20-1 Hockey East), while senior Ian O'Connor (Londonderry, N.H.) recorded two assists to lead the Friars.
The River Hawks' Joseph Pendenza gave his team a 1-0 lead when he re-directed a shot past PC junior goalie Alex Beaudry (Cumberland, Ont.) at 12:57 of the first period. The Friars evened the score at 1-1 with 34 seconds left in the period. O'Connor chipped the puck out of the PC zone along the left wing boards to classmate Kyle MacKinnon (Walnut, Calif.) who broke in on a two-on-one rush with line mate Ben Farrer (Calgary, Alberta). MacKinnon slid pass to Farrer whose back hander eluded UML netminder Doug Carr.
The second period featured five goals, four by the River Hawks as they took a 5-2 lead going into the third period. Wetmore gave UML a 2-1 lead at 1:30, but the Friars responded with a power-play goal by junior Matt Bergland (Faribault, Minn.) at 3:13 to even the score at 2-2. It marked Bergland's fourth goal of the season as O'Connor and sophomore Tim Schaller (Merrimack, N.H.) assisted on the play. However, the River Hawks scored the next three goals for a three-goal edge. Vallorani broke the tie a 5:39 with a power-play goal, while Jason DeLuca added another goal at 8:42. Wetmore capped off the scoring in the second period as he tallied his second of the night with two seconds remaining.
Matt Ferreira scored in the third period, while Vallorani added another goal, his second of the night to seal the win.
The Friars are back in action on Friday, March 4 when they travel to North Andover, Mass. to play fourth-ranked Merrimack College at 7:00 p.m.
