BURLINGTON, Vt. - The Providence College men's hockey team and the University of Vermont skated to a 1-1 overtime tie Friday night in a Hockey East game played at the Gutterson Fieldhouse in Burlington, Vt. With the tie, the Friars move to 7-12-6 overall and 3-10-5 in Hockey East, while the Catamounts are now 5-15-5 overall and 3-11-4 in league play.
The Friars finished with a 15-7 advantage in shots in the first period. PC's best scoring chance came on the power play when Eric Baier (North Kingstown, R.I.) was setup in front and fired two shots, but UVM goalie Rob Madore stopped each shot at 14:39. At the other end of the ice, junior Alex Beaudry (Cumberland, Ontario) made seven saves.
The Catamounts took a 1-0 lead at 4:07 of the second period on a power-play goal by Drew MacKenzie. The Friars responded at 10:35 and evened the score just as their power play expired. Freshman Steven Shamanski (Carberry, Manitoba) fired a shot from the point that was saved by Madore, but senior Ian O'Connor (Londonderry, N.H.) tapped the puck off a UVM defenseman and into the net. Both teams had scoring opportunities later in the period. MacKenzie nearly netted his second of the night when his shot from the right circle was saved by Beaudry. With one minute remaining in the period as a UVM power play ended, senior Matt Germain (Rockland, Mass.) skated into the Vermont zone, eluded a defenseman, but his shot hit the left post.
Providence's penalty kill was strong in the third period as it thwarted two UVM power plays with less than five minutes remaining. The Friars had a power-play chance in overtime and kept possession in the Vermont zone for most of the two minutes, but could not convert. Beaudry finished with 32 saves, while Madore stopped 39 shots.
The two teams will complete the two-game weekend series tomorrow night at the Gutterson Fieldhouse.
