Syracuse, N.Y. -
The men's and women's swimming and diving teams each posted individual results in a tri-meet held over the course of Friday and Saturday, February 4 and 5, at Syracuse. The teams competed against BIG EAST foes Villanova and Syracuse in what marked the final home meet ever for the 101-year-old Syracuse swimming and diving program. Syracuse will be discontinuing their programs at the completion of this season.
In the 50y freestyle event, junior Collin Casciano (Hewitt, N.J.) posted a time less than 7 tenths-of-a-second off the Friars' season-best time set by junior Matt Green (Westfield, N.J.) (22.15) at the Harold Anderson Invitational in December. Casciano's time of 22.82 was good enough for fourth out of the field of 22. Sophomore freestyle specialist Marc Freda (Lincroft, N.J.) had a good meet for the Friars as he posted a fourth-place finish in the 100y free (49.86) and backed that up with a third-place finish in the 200y free (1:49.29).
The women saw strong performances in 50y freestyle event. Sophomore Erin Nanna (Westwood, Mass.) led the charge with a fourth-place finish (26.06). Out of the 20-swimmer field, six Friars help make up the top-10 finishers. Freshman standout Kimberly Hall (Morristown, N.J.) also swam well for the Friar women. Hall earned a victory in the 100y fly (1:04.21) and in the 100y back (1:05.22). She also was third out of 19 in the 100y free (57.29).
Sophomore Allie Black (Mystic, Conn.) continued her impressive diving season by winning the 1m diving event with a dive that scored 269.10 points--just a dozen points off her best dive of the season (281.32).
The men's and women's swimming and diving teams will wrap up their 2010-11 season on February 11-13 (diving) and February 16-19 (swimming) at the BIG EAST Championships. This year's meet will be held at the University of Louisville's Ralph R. Wright Natatorium in Louisville, Ky.
Combined, thirty Friar men and women have qualified for the BIG EAST Championships.
