BLOOMINGTON, IND. - Providence College junior Julian Matthews (Nelson, New Zealand) has advanced to the quarterfinals in the 1500-meters at the East Preliminary of the NCAA Track and Field Championships.
Matthews posted a time of 3:48.89 to place second in his preliminary. The top five places in each heat, plus the next four best times, earn the berth into Saturday's quarterfinals.
On Saturday, the top five finishers in each quarterfinal, plus the next two times, will earn a trip to the national championships (held June 8-12 in Des Moines Iowa).
Junior David McCarthy (Waterford, Iowa), an All-American during the most recent indoor season, narrowly missed advancing in this season's 1500. McCarthy crossed in seventh place in his heat with a clocking of 3:50.72.
In the women's 1500-meters, the Friars were represented by freshman Laura Nagel (Napier, New Zealand). She capped an outstanding debut outdoor campaign with a posting of 4:32.44 - falling short of quarterfinal qualification with a seventh-place prelim performance.
The fourth and final Friar competing at the regionals is junior Hannah Davidson (Saratoga Springs, N.Y.). She will take part in the Steeplechase prelims on Friday.
