DES MOINES, IOWA - Providence College junior Julian Matthews (Nelson, New Zealand) has placed 12th in the finals of the 1500-meters at the NCAA Outdoor Track and Field Championships. The effort earns the Friar distance star his second, Second-Team All-American Honor in Track and Field this year.

The Friar crossed the finish line in 3:47.95 on Saturday, just over five seconds off the pace of event champion, Oregon's Matthew Centrowitz (3:42.54.) To get to the championship finale, Matthews thrived through several rounds of qualifiers against the best distance runners in the east region and then in Thursday's preliminary heat.

Saturday's effort caps a remarkable junior campaign for the New Zealander that saw him run in three national championships. In the fall, he helped the Friar men's cross country team advance to the NCAA title run. During the winter season, he advanced to the preliminary heats of the 1500 meters to become one of indoor's Second Team All-American's.

This is also the second consecutive spring Matthews has competed in the outdoor NCAA Championships. Last year, he advanced to the preliminary heat.
