PROVIDENCE, R.I. - On Wednesday, August 31, the Providence College women's soccer team defeated the Holy Cross Crusaders, 5-0, to notch its first win of the season at Glay Field. Seniors Taylor Bartini (Suffield, Conn.) and Courtney Collins (North Wales, Pa.) and Junior Mary Vercollone(Pembroke, Mass.) combined for the Friars five goals.
In the 12th minute of play, Collins scored the first of her two goals on a ball received from Vercollone, when her shot deflected off the post into the back of the net. To increase the lead to two in the first half, freshman Allison Walton (Brunswick, Maine) crossed the ball to Vercollone who made a sliding shot to chip the ball over the goalie's head for a goal.
Collins looked to Vercollone for the ball again in the second half and took a shot across the goalmouth to the far post to increase the Friar's lead to 3-0 in the 52nd minute of play. Vercollone only needed 2:52 before she scored her second goal of the game after a corner kick from Laura Di Clemente deflected and she headed the ball from two yards out. Bartini was able to notch her first goal of the game and second of the season when the ball got loose 20 yards out and she shot on an open net.
The Friar defense held strong throughout the entirity of the game to shutout the crusaders. The game marks the team's second shutout of the season.
