Still On The Road:The Providence College volleyball team concludes an eight-game road trip to open the season at the USF asics/Powerade Challenge in San Francisco, Calif. The Friars started the season by splitting four matches at the La Salle Invitational, including a pair of wins in matches that got underway at 7:00 a.m. and 9:00 a.m. due to the impending arrival of Hurricane Irene. The Friars then traveled to Worcester, Mass., where they fell to Holy Cross in five sets on Wednesday, August 31.
Scouting Memphis:The Tigers won all four matches their opening weekend, hosting the Memphis Invitational. They took home the tournament title by defeating Alabama A&M (3-0), Southeast Missouri (3-1), Arkansas-Little Rock (3-1) and Georgia State (3-1). Altrese Hawkins and Marija Jovanovic led the Tiger offense in the first weekend, averaging 4.27 and 3.67 kills per set, respectively. Setter Hajnalka Molnar is averaging an impressive 13.27 assists per set. The defense is led by Aleksandra Petronijevic, who is averaging an even 5.00 digs per set. The Tigers are coached by April Jauregui, a 2001 Memphis graduate who is in her third season as head coach.
Friars vs. Tigers:Providence and Memphis have never met in volleyball.
Scouting San Francisco:The Dons opened the season dropping all three matches at the Chevron Rainbow Wahine Invitational. They were swept by host Hawaii and fell in a pair of five-set matches to Arizona and Wichita State. The attack is led by the tandem of Jocelyn Levig (3.62 kills per set) and Valentina Zaloznik (3.08). Joan Caloiaro sets-up the offense and is averaging 8.92 assists per set. Rebecca Kopilovitch leads the defense, with 4.46 digs per set, while Caloiaro, Alycia Cox and Leanna Ludes all average at least 2.00 digs per set. Gilad Doron is in his fifth season as Head Coach at USF.
Friars vs. Dons: Providence and San Francisco met twice in the 1986 season, with the Friars taking both matches.
Scouting Columbia:The Lions are opening their 2011 season at the USF asics/Powerade Challenge. Jon Wilson will be coaching Columbia for the fourth season. He coached the Lions to a third-place finish in the Ivy League last year, the best in program history. They return All-Ivy League selection Megan Gaughn, who averaged 3.65 kills and 3.23 digs per set in 2010.
Friars vs. Lions:Providence and Columbia last met in the 2006 season, when the Lions swept a match in the Sacred Heart Invitational in Fairfield, Conn.
On Deck: The Friars finally open their home schedule when they play host to crosstown rival Brown on Wednesday, September 7. First serve at PC's Alumni Hall is set for 7:00 p.m.
