Providence College Women's Soccer To Host St. John's

PROVIDENCE, R.I. - The Providence College women's soccer team will host the St. John's Red Storm on Thursday, September 15 at 4:00 p.m. The matchup is the Friars first BIG EAST Conference game this season. Providence posted a 1-1 record last week, with a 2-0 loss to Brown and a 2-0 victory over Marist.

On September 7, the Friars took on their crosstown rival, the Brown Bears. The Friars held off the Bears for the majority of the game, until Brown scored in the 77th minute of regulation. The Bears second goal followed immediately, in the 78th minute.

On September 9, Providence defeated Marist in a strong offensive and defensive effort, shutting out the Red Foxes, 2-0. The Friars put pressure on the Storm early with a 6-3 advantage in shots in the first half. In the 35th minute senior Cynthia Warman (Osseo, Minn.) scored her first goal of the season off a cross from classmate Laura Di Clemente (Blue Bell, Pa.). In the second half, Providence maintained possession out-shooting Marist, 4-1. The Friars' second goal came in the 83rd minute when Di Clemente shot from 15 yards out and placed the ball over the goalie's head to the right corner of the net.

Di Clemente leads the team in points (eight) followed by classmate Courtney Collins (North Wales, Pa.), who has notched three goals and one assist for seven points. Senior Caitlin Walker (Metuchen, N.J.) has notched three shutouts in goal for the Friars.

ST. JOHN'S (4-2-1): The Red Storm enters Thursday's matchup coming off a come-from-behind win over Yale, 2-1, on September 11. Down 1-0 at half, Jen Gibbons scored the equalizer in the 65th minute. Jen Leaverton scored the game-winner in the 78th minute to notch the third-consecutive win for St. John's.

Leaverton leads the team in points (eight) with three goals and two assists followed by classmate Anna Torregiano who notched one goal and two assists on the season for four points overall. Gibbons has three points for he goal and assist this season. Goalkeeper Kristin Russell has played in all but 3:50 minutes of competition for the Red Storm and has notched three shutouts on the season.

The last time Providence and St. John's met, Providence defeated the Red Storm, 1-0 in Queens, N.Y. The Friars are 11-11-2 overall against the Red Storm and 1-3-1 in the last five competitions.
