Friar Volleyball Heads North For Dartmouth Invitational

PROVIDENCE, R.I. - The Providence College volleyball team (4-8) heads to Hanover, N.H., this Friday-Saturday, September 16-17, to play in the Dartmouth Invitational. It is the final in-season tournament of 2011 for the Friars and will see them face Dartmouth, Delaware State and Central Connecticut State.

The Friars meet the host Big Green on Friday, September 16 at 7:00 p.m. They return on Saturday, September 17, to take on Delaware State at 11:00 a.m. Providence has posted a 3-0 record in games that get underway before noon. They wrap-up action on Saturday when they face Central Connecticut State at 3:00 p.m.

Head Coach Margot Royer-Johnson's team is led by senior middle blocker Lauren Fletcher (Syracuse, N.Y.). The captain currently ranks second in America East with a .349 hitting percentage, while ranking fourth in kills per set at 3.30. She accounts for 3.90 of the Friars' points per set, a total that also ranks fourth in the league. The offense is run through fellow senior captain Carly Morrison (Larkspur, Calif.), who is averaging 6.57 assists per set.

The back row is led by junior Cassie Muzzonigro (Gibsonia, Pa.). The libero leads the America East in both total digs (228) and digs per set (5.18). Providence also gets a significant contribution in both rows from freshman Colleen McCollom (Indian Head Park, Ill.). The rookie is second on the team in both kills (1.55) and digs (2.39) per set.

Dartmouth enters the tournament with a 5-3 mark. The match against Providence will be the home opener for first-year Head Coach Erin Lindsey's squad. They opened the season by winning the Bucknell Invitational without dropping a set, before going 1-3 in a tournament at Army. They defeated Holy Cross, 3-1, on Tuesday, Sepetmber 13.

The Big Green boasts the reigning Ivy Leauge Player of the Week, Madeline Baird. She averaged 4.00 kills per set at the West Point challenge and is averaging 3.67 kills per set on the season. Annie Villanueva adds 2.77 kills per set, while ALex Schoenberger contributes 2.55. Setter Alissa Santa Maria is averaging 7.71 assists per set, while Amber Bryant keys the back row with 4.73 digs per set.

Delaware State enters the weekend with a 1-7 mark, having just scored their first win of the season over Quinnipiac, 3-0, on September 10. The Friars and Hornets have one common opponent thus far, with both teams having scored a win over La Salle. Delware State had their opening weekend cancelled due to Hurricane Irene, before going 0-3 at the Cornell Invitational, falling to St. Francis (Pa.) and going 1-3 at the Hartford/Quinnipiac Invitational.

Head Coach Renee Arnold's team is led by Jessica Russell-Croucher. She is posting 2.89 kills per set. The offense runs through setter Christobel Fakaosi (7.48 assists per set), while the defense is led by 3.89 digs per set from Sonja Banicevic.

Central Connecticut State travels to Dartmouth having won their last three matches, completing a sweep of their own tournament with wins over St. Peter's, Bucknell and Stony Brook. They sport an overall record of 5-4 and have one common opponent with Providence, as both teams scored victories over St. Peter's.

The Blue Devils are led by 3.41 kills per set from Emily Cochran, who adds 2.56 digs per set. Blaike King (2.19 kills per set) and Sara Delacey (2.09 kills per set) also contribute to the attack. Setter Danielle Gasser has been impressive early, posting 10.00 assists per set. Brittany Schumacher leads the defense with 4.13 digs per set.

Providence returns to action on Wednesday, September 21, when they travel to the Bronx, N.Y., to take on Manhattan College. First serve with the Jaspers is set for 7:00 p.m.
