BRONX, N.Y. - The Providence College volleyball team fell in four sets at Manhattan (18-25, 15-25, 25-23, 19-25) on Wednesday, September 21. The Friars drop to 5-11, while the Jaspers improve to 6-5.
The Friars were kept in it by reigning America East Player of the Week Lauren Fletcher (Syracuse, N.Y.). The senior middle blocker registered 19 kills while hitting at a .333 clip. Classmate Shelagh Dolan (Westford, Mass.) added six kills, while the other two seniors, Carly Morrison (Larkspur, Calif.) and Lauren Hendel (Lloyd Harbor, N.Y.) each added five kills. Morrison was outstanding running the offense, picking up 32 assists.
The back row was led by junior Cassie Muzzonigro (Gibsonia, Pa.). The libero, who entered the week leading the America East in digs per set, recorded 17 digs. Morrison contributed 10 digs, while freshman Beth Hoyt (San Luis Obispo, Calif.) added nine. The freshman class was key in the back row for Providence, as Colleen McCollom (Indian Head Park, Ill.), Anna Russian (Round Rock, Texas), Mackenzie Ziegler (Portage, Wis.) and Kelly Ashmore (St. Louis, Mo.) combined for 31 digs. Sophomore Anne Powers (La Selva Beach, Calif.) added five digs.
Manhattan was led by 16 kills from LaKell Havens, while Alexa Lampasona and Malia McGuinness each added 12. Hollegn Henderson had an outstanding match running the offense, as she contributed 40 assists. Four Jaspers reached double-digit digs. Kelsey Huntoon led the way with 12, followed by 11 each from Julie Bies and Sarah Haselhorst, while Henderson reached a double-double with 10 digs.
The Friar offense struggled early on, hitting just .176 in the first set and .000 in the second. They rebounded to take the third behing a .306 hitting percentage, but were unable to overcome seven errors in the final frame as Manhattan took the match, 3-1.
Head Coach Margot Royer-Johnson's squad has a week off before returning to action on Wednesday, September 28 at Rhode Island. First serve in Kingston, R.I., is set for 7:00 p.m. The annual showdown between Ocean State rivals will be televised by Cox Sports on a tape-delay basis, with broadcast times to be announced.
