PROVIDENCE, R.I. - The Providence College women's soccer team defeated Cincinnati, 2-0, on Friday, September 23 at its own Glay Field. Senior Laura Di Clemente (Blue Bell, Pa.) scored both goals for the Friars, who are now 4-3-4 overall and 2-1 in the BIG EAST.
Di Clemente scored her first goal of the match, in the 65th, minute from 15 yards out on a ball from classmate Cynthia Warman (Osseo, Minn.). Freshman Renee Altimari (Westerly, R.I.) had the first touch of the sequence.
In the 85th minute, with Cincinnati looking to score the equalizer, senior Taylor Bartini (Suffield, Conn.) carried the ball forward into Bearcat territory and then passed back to Di Clemente who shot from 30 yards out. The ball sailed over the goalkeeper into the top left-hand corner of the net for her second goal of the game. Di Clemente leads the team in points (15) on six goals and three assists.
The Bearcats had an opportunity to score when Jazmine Rhodes took a shot from the right flank, but senior goalkeeper Caitlin Walker (Metuchen, N.J.) made the save from point blank. Overall, Cincinnati outshot the Friars, 9-7, and had a 10-1 advantage in corner kicks. Walker had five saves on the match and has tallied five shutouts on the season.
The Friars are back in action at Glay Field when they take on Louisville on Sunday, September 25 at 1:00 p.m.
