PROVIDENCE, R.I. - The Providence College volleyball team dropped a four-set match to crosstown rival Brown (18-25, 25-19, 18-25, 18-25). The Friars fall to 2-7 on the season, while the Bears improve to 2-2.
Senior Lauren Flecther (Syracuse, N.Y.) led the cause for the Friars, nothing 11 kills, hitting at a .320 clip and recording four blocks. Senior Lauren Hendel (Lloyd Harbor, N.Y.) and freshman Colleen McCollom (Indian Head Park, Ill.) each added six kills, with McCollom adding eight digs.
Junior libero Cassie Muzzonigro (Gibsonia, Pa.) led the back row with 24 digs. The setting game saw senior Carly Morrison (Larkspur, Calif.) record 12 assists, while sophomore Anne Powers (La Selva Beach, Calif.) added seven helpers.
Brown was led by Maddie Lord, who picked up 15 kills. Taylor Bantle added 12 kills and hit at a blistering .588 clip. Amanda Nickel, Kathryn Glickman and Thea Derrough each added six kills. Setter Alexandra Rieckhoff picked-up 51 assists, while Annika Gliottone led the back row with 31 digs.
The teams split the first two sets, Brown taking a 25-19 win in the first and PC taking the second, 25-19. The Bears hit an impressive .372 to take the first, before the Friars responded with a solid .294 hitting percentage to even the match.
After the intermission, the Friar offense struggled to get in sync. PC committed eight errors in the third set and seven in the fourth, as Brown took both frames, 25-18, to take the match, 3-1.
The Friars return to action this weekend when they host the eighth annual Friar Classic at Alumni Hall. Play opens on Friday, September 9, with Coppin State facing Lafayette at 6:00 p.m., with the Friars set to meet St. Francis (N.Y.) at 8:00 p.m. Play continues with four matches on Saturday, September 10. PC will face Coppin State at 11:00 a.m., before playing the tournament finale against Lafayette at 5:00 p.m. Providence is the defending champion of the event, while Fletcher is the defending most-valuable player.
