Women's Hockey Edged by #5 Boston College, 3-2

CHESTNUT HILL, MASS. - The Providence College women's ice hockey team was defeated, 3-2, by fifth-ranked Boston College Friday night at Conte Forum.

It is the third straight game the Friars have lost by one goal and eighth this season.

With the effort, however, Friar senior Genevieve Lacasse (Kingston, Ontario) broke the school record for career-games played by a goaltender. She has now seen action in 116 contests. The old mark of 115 was held by Jana Bugden '07.

Providence grabbed the initial lead with the lone score of the first period, capitalizing on a 5-on-3 advantage at 7:21. After sophomore Rebecca Morse (Westfield, N.J.) blasted a slapshot from the right point, the rebound kicked directly to senior Laura Veharanta (La Verne, Calif.). The winger hammered the puck home on the short side for her eight of the season.

Boston College got the equalizer with its own power play midway through the middle period. At 9:20, an Eagle blast from the point deflected off a Friar boot and towards forward Mart Restuccia. The senior one-timed the puck from the left circle into the net, knotting the game, 1-1.

B.C. earned a 2-1 lead moments into the third period. At the 1:50 mark, Eagle penalty killer Emily Field pounced on a loose puck just inside her own blueline and skated out on a 2-on-0 break, eventually feeding freshman Alex Carpenter for a short-handed strike.

The Eagles Blake Bolden increased the cushion to 3-1 at 15:23 with an unassisted score. Providence freshman Haley Frade (Marion, Mass.) answered just 17 seconds later to round out the scoring at 3-2. It was Frade's second of the year. Friedman earned her second assist of the game on the play.

Lacasse halted 33 shots in the effort. Boston College netminder Corinne Boyles stopped 27.

The Friars return to action Sunday, January 22 when they visit Maine. The puck will drop at noon and the game can be heard on Friars.com. Providence returns home on Saturday, January 28 when it welcomes UConn to Schneider Arena for a 2 p.m. start. The game will serve as the Friars annual Skating Strides Against Breast Cancer event and proceeds will benefit the Gloria Gemma Breast Cancer Resource Foundation. Also during Saturday's game, the Friars will mark ten years in the Women's Hockey East Association by recognizing their Tenth Anniversary Team.
