Box Score

DURHAM, N.H. - Senior Laura Veharanta (La Verne, Calif.) broke a 1-1 tie, with just 1:29 remaining in regulation, to lead the Providence College women's ice hockey team past host New Hampshire, 3-1, Saturday at the Whittemore Center.

After receiving a feed from sophomore Rebecca Morse (Westfield, N.J.), Veharanta carried the puck down the wing. An initial attempt was saved before the senior crashed the net and deposited the rebound for the eventual game winner.

Providence added an insurance score with just 42 seconds remaining, as senior Kate Bacon collected a rebound, brought the puck wide of the net and hammered in her ninth of the year to round out the scoring.

Providence is undefeated this season (10-0-2) when scoring at last three goals.

The victory lifts the Friars into fourth place in the Hockey East standings with just three games to play. Should they hold that position, they will claim home ice advantage for the quarterfinal round of the conference tournament.

Providence jumped on the board early in the first period. At 4:43, sophomore defenseman Rebecca Morse (Westfield, N.J.) connected on a power play strike for her third of the season. Morse now has five points in her last three contests.

UNH knotted the game, 1-1, at 8:16 of the third period, a power play goal courtesy Arielle O'Neill, to set the stage for Veharanta's heroics.

Providence senior goaltender Genevieve Lacasse (Kingston, Ontario) halted 22 shots for the victory. Wildcat netminder Jenn Gilligan stopped 21.

These same teams will meet again tomorrow, February 12 at the Whittemore Center. Face-off is scheduled for 2 p.m. and a live audio broadcast can be heard on Friars.com.

Providence returns home on Friday, February 17 to welcome #7 Northeastern . Prior to the 7 p.m. faceoff, the Friars will honor the seven members of the Class of 2012 with the Senior Day Ceremony. Tickets are available by calling (401) 865 GO PC of by visiting Friars.com.
