BOSTON, MASS. - The Providence College men's soccer team opened the 2012 season on the road against Northeastern University on Friday, August 24 in Boston, Mass. The Huskies came away with a 2-1 victory in double overtime, as Laurence Braude tallied the game winner on a strike from the left side with just 31-seconds remaining in the second overtime.
The first half was a scoreless draw (0-0), as the Huskies held a slim advantage in shots, 6-5. Northeastern managed the only shot on goal in the opening 45-minutes of play as Don Anding got the ball on target in the 16th minute, but Providence goalkeeper Byron Regester (Westerville, Ohio) made the save.
The Friars took a 1-0 advantage in the 56th minute as senior Keith Jecewiz (Smithtown, N.Y.) placed a hard strike into the back of the net. Marc Cintron (Piscataway, N.J.) was credited with the assist as he dumped a short pass over the Husky defenders into the middle of the box, providing Jecewiz with the scoring chance.
The Huskies evened the score, 1-1, with just 4:29 remaining in regulation as Conner Alexander converted a header at the right post to force extra time. During regulation, Northeastern held an 11-8 advantage in shots, while corner kicks were even at, 8-8.
In the first 10-minute overtime, the two teams were scoreless. Neither team managed to get a shot off during the first session, while Providence registered the only corner kick.
In the second overtime session, the Huskies held a 2-1 advantage in shots. The second proved to be the game-winner as Braude found the back of the net with 31-seconds remaining on the clock.
Regester finished the night with two saves in the loss. Oliver Blum took the win in goal for Northeastern and did not record a save.
Providence (0-1) returns to action on Monday, August 27 against Monmouth. The game will be played in West Long Branch, N.J. and is scheduled to begin at 7:00 p.m. Live stats will be available online via Monmouth's athletic website at www.gomuhawks.com. The Hawks enter Monday's game with a 1-0 record.
