Women's Soccer Ties Holy Cross, 1-1

WORCESTER, MASS. - The Providence College women's soccer team took a trip to Worcester, Mass. on Friday, August 24 to take on the Crusaders of Holy Cross. After a well fought battle, the Friars came out of the match with a 1-1 tie.

The Crusaders struck first with a goal from Annie Galvin in the fifth minute of play. Galvin received a cross from teammate Gina Righini six yards from goal, and landed her strike in the top right corner of the net. Despite outshooting the Crusaders, 10-4, in the first half, the Friars went into halftime with a one goal deficit.

Providence evened the score with 18:52 remaining on the clock in regulation when senior Mary Vercollone (Pembroke, Mass.) tallied her first points on the season. Vercollone struck the ball hard to the lower left-hand corner. Vercollone's unassisted strike from the 18 yard line reached the back of the net. This equalizer would send the game to overtime. The Friars outshot the Crusaders in the second half, 11-0.

The first session of overtime was scoreless on both ends of the field. The Friars recorded the only shot of the period. The second overtime period was scoreless with one shot recorded by Providence. The game ended in a, 1-1, tie.

Providence finished the game with 23 shots and had the advantage in corner kicks, 8-1. The Friars' back line limited the Crusaders to four shots in the game. Sophomore goalkeeper Jessica Goudreault (Sherborn, Mass.) finished the game with one save.

The Friars are back in action on Sunday, August 26 in Hamden, Conn for an afternoon match-up with Quinnipiac. The match is scheduled for 1:00 p.m.
