Final Stats PROVIDENCE, R.I. - The Providence College women's soccer team recorded the win at Xavier, 1-0, on Thursday, Oct. 16. The Friars have won their past two BIG EAST conference games and move to 7-6-2 (BIG EAST 3-3-0) on the season, while Xavier falls to 3-10-3 (BIG EAST 0-5-1).
At the end of the first half, the game remained scoreless. The Friars held the advantage in shots (6-3) and corner kicks (7-0).
At the 60 minute mark, junior Catherine Zimmerman (Piscataway, N.J.) found the back of the net with an assist from sophomore Rachel Ugolik (Hamden, Conn.) to give the Friars the lead, 1-0.
In 90 minutes of play, sophomore goalkeeper Kristyn Shea (Piscataway, N.J.) registered three saves for the shutout. In net for Xavier, Katie Markesbery recorded five saves. The Friars outshot the Musketeers (10-7) with six shots on goal.
"This was a great character win for the team," said Head Coach Sam Lopes. "Coming off an emotional win and playing on the road against an opponent who's lost a handful of close games, it was extremely important to be engaged and efficient with a level of energy to get the result. There are no easy BIG EAST games. I am proud of the team and it was a well deserved win."
The Friars will return to action to take on BIG EAST foe St. John's at 1:00 p.m. on Sunday, Oct. 19 in Jamaica, N.Y.
