Providence won the first set, 25-23, to take a quick advantage in the match. Sophomore Abigail Dix (Gibsonia, Pa.) led the Friars with five kills in the set. Junior Jordan Wiesler (Coconut Creek, Fla.) tallied 10 assists and senior Kelly Ashmore (St. Louis, Mo.) recorded seven digs.
The Red Storm won the second set 25-19 to even the match at 1-1.
Providence was edged by St. John's in the third set 25-22 to take a 2-1 match-lead. Fitzgerald registered five kills while sophomore Michelle Cruz (Midland Park, N.J.) added 10 digs.
St. John's won the fourth set (25-14) to capture the match.
Overall Wiesler finished with 34 assists while Cruz reached 21 digs.
St. John's was led by Karin Palgutova who recorded 21 kills. Deniz Mutlugil recorded 54 assists and Shawna Lei Santos tallied 23 digs.
The Friars next compete next weekend when they host Villanova on Friday, Oct. 31 and Seton Hall on Saturday, Nov. 1. Friday's match will begin at 7:00 p.m. and Saturday's match will start at 5:00 p.m.
