PROVIDENCE, R.I. - The Providence College volleyball team will travel to Butler on Friday, Nov. 21 and Xavier Saturday, Nov. 22 to close out the 2014 season. Butler's match will start at 12:00 p.m. and will be televised on the BIG EAST Digital Network while the Xavier contest is set to begin at 7:00 p.m.
Last weekend the Friars split against Creighton (L, 3-0) and Georgetown (W, 3-0) at Alumni Hall. Sophomore Kayla Johnson (Silver Spring, Md.) recorded a career-high 22 kills against the Hoyas while registering a .500 hitting percentage. It was Johnson's fourth straight match leading the Friars in kills. Johnson's 22 kills ties sophomore Kayla Fitzgerald (Redlands, Calif.) for the most kills in a match this season. Currently, it is the highest total in a three set match, as Fitzgerald's was in four sets.
Overall, Providence (6-24, 2-14 BIG EAST) is led by Fitzgerald who is averaging 2.65 kills per set. Junior Jordan Wiesler (Coconut Creek, Fla.) has recorded 8.14 assists per set, which ranks eighth in the BIG EAST. Sophomore Michelle Cruz (Midland Park, N.J.) has registered 4.94 digs per set and 0.27 service aces per set. Cruz is second in the BIG EAST in digs and ranks fourth in service aces.
SCOUTING BUTLER (18-10, 10-6 BIG EAST): The Bulldogs enter their contest having lost two straight, against Xavier (3-1) and Creighton (3-2). Belle Obert leads the team in kills with 3.76 per set. Makayla Ferguson had tallied a team-best 10.44 assists per set while Jadyn Yarling leads the defense with 4.24 digs per set. As a team, Butler ranks second in the conference in blocks (2.95 per set) and digs (17.50 per set).
SCOUTING XAVIER (17-11, 10-6 BIG EAST): Abbey Bessler leads the Musketeers with 3.53 kills per set. Jesse Earl has a team-high 4.53 digs while Aubree Smith leads the team with 9.61 assists per set. Xavier ranks second in the BIG EAST in services aces (1.41 per set) as a team.
