Providence scored first while on the power-play (7:04, 1st) when junior Lexi Romanchuk (San Jose, Calif.) converted on a slap shot with the feed coming from seniors Haley Frade (Marion, Mass.) and Allison Micheletti (Inver Grove Heights, Minn.). Both teams were even with shots in the stanza at 6-6.
The Friars added to their lead (2-0) in the second period when Frade scored in front of the net, beating the Union goalie at 5:44. Sophomore Cassidy Carels (Bruxelles, Manitoba) and senior Victoria Virtue (Walpole, Mass) tallied the assists on the goal. The Friars had the offensive advantage in the period tallying 17 shots while Union generated 10.
Union started its scoring at 14:31 into the third period to inch closer to PC, 2-1. Nicole Russell notched the goal with the assist from Kathryn Tomaselli. The Dutchwomen tied it up at the 18:20 mark when Tomaselli slid one past junior netminder Allie Morse (Cottage Grove, Minn.), with a battle in front of the net. Hannah Erickson and Alex Tancrell-Fontaine were credited with the assists.
The game remained tied through overtime with Providence holding the edge in shots, 3-2.
Morse finished the game with 27 saves while Union goalie Shenae Lundberg stopped 25.
Union had the overall advantage in shots, 29-27, outshooting Providence in only the third period.
The Friars return home to Schneider Arena on Sunday, Nov. 9 to face Hockey East foe Connecticut for a 2:00 p.m. puck drop.
