STORRS, Conn. - The Providence College women's ice hockey team was defeated by Connecticut, 4-1, on Sunday at the Freitas Ice Forum in Hockey East action. The Friars now stand at 6-16-4 on the season and 5-8-1 in conference play while UConn moves to 7-14-6 overall and 3-8-3 in the Hockey East.

UConn scored first with a short range unassisted goal by Emily Snodgrass to give the Huskies a quick 1-0 lead 3:04 into the first period. The goal was the only shot on goal registered by UConn, with the Friars holding a 16-1 shot advantage in the opening stanza.

Connecticut took a 2-0 lead 11:17 into the second with a goal from Margaret Zimmer. She was assisted by Rachel Farrel and Cassandra Opela.

Providence got on the board with a tally from senior Brooke Simpson (Boxborough, Mass.) in the slot to make it 2-1. Seniors Beth Hanrahan (Poolesville, Md.) and Allison Micheletti were credited with the helpers.

The Huskies scored again towards the closing of the second (17:36), to again bring its lead to two (3-1). Providence had the advantage in shots again in the period, 12-9.

UConn added a power-play goal by Kelly Harris in the third (1:38) to the score to its eventual final of 4-1. The goal was assisted by Theresa Knutson.

The Friars had three chances while on the power-play in the third, including a 5-on-3, but were unable to generate a goal.

Junior Allie Morse (Cottage Grove, Minn.) had a total of 14 saves in the game while Annie Belanger stopped a total of 36 shots.

The Friars will next play No. 1 Boston College on Friday, Jan. 30 at Schneider Arena for a 7:00 p.m. game. The contest will close out the Hockey East season series with the Eagles. BC won the first two games of the series in a home-and-home weekend on Oct. 31 and Nov. 1. Providence will follow the BC game with an away game on Sunday, Feb. 1 at Vermont for the season's first meeting.
