PROVIDENCE, R.I. - The Providence College women's soccer team defeated Creighton , 3-2, on Oct. 17 in Omaha, Neb. The Friars improved to 10-6 (3-3 BIG EAST), while the Bluejays moved to 10-7 (2-4 BIG EAST). It marks the first time the Friars registered 10 wins in a season since 1993 when the Friars registered a 10-9-2 mark.
Creighton opened up the scoring in the 12th minute with an unassisted goal from Lauren Sullivan to make the game 1-0 early on.
The Friars responded with back-to-back goals to close the first half with a 2-1 lead. The first goal was from freshman Casey Estey (Kensington, N.H.) in the 28th minute for her third goal for the season. Three minutes later (30:32), senior Catherine Zimmerman (Madison, N.H.) scored another unassisted goal, for her sixth tally of the season.
Ten minutes into the second half (45:08), Friar sophomore Christina Klaum (Rockville Centre, N.Y.) scored an unassisted goal from 30 yards out, off of a deflection.
The Bluejays scored their final goal in the 68th minute with a header from Lauren Sullivan.
In net for the Friars was junior Kristyn Shea (Piscataway, N.J.), who played all 90 minutes and recorded four saves. Erin Scott was in net for the Bluejays and made two saves.
"First and foremost I would like to thank Creighton for their hospitality," Head Coach Sam Lopes said. "Creighton athletics is a first class organization and treated us very well. The win was very important because we have played very well, but the ball had not bounced our way. We gave up a bad goal early, but gpt great response from the group. It was a total team effort, we came to Omaha with a goal in mind and we completed that goal, so I'm very proud of the team."
The Friars will return to action with a BIG EAST home game versus DePaul at 7:00 p.m. on Oct. 22 at the Ray Treacy Track and Field.
