PROVIDENCE, R.I. - The Providence College volleyball team fell to BIG EAST foe Creighton in straight sets (3-0) on Saturday, Oct. 3 in Providence, R.I. Creighton improves to 10-7 overall and sits atop the BIG EAST with a 4-0 conference record. Providence falls to 9-9 overall (0-3 BIG EAST).
Kayla Fitzgerald (Redlands, Calif.) led the Friars with nine kills in the match, while freshman Allison Impellizeri (Seaford, N.Y.) and senior Nicole Fletcher (Syracuse, N.Y.) each checked in with seven kills.
The Bluejays were led offensively by two players who registered double-digit kills in Marysa Wilkinson and Lauren Smith. Wilkinson posted a .650 hitting percentage with 14 kills on 20 total attacks. Smith hit .500 on the day with 12 kills on 20 attacking opportunities.
Creighton escaped with a 25-23 victory in the first set. The Friars trailed 21-18 and rattled off three of the next four points to tie the set, 22-22. The Bluejays called timeout and returned to the court to win the next two points for a 24-22 lead and held on to win the set.
The Bluejays earned a 25-19 victory in the second set as Marysa Wilkinson tallied six kills on nine total attacks (.556). Impellizeri tallied five kills to lead the Friar effort.
Creighton captured the match (3-0) after claiming a 25-20 victory in the third set. Fitzgerald led the Friars with four kills, while Jess Bird also collected four kills for the Bluejays.
Michelle Cruz (Midland Park, N.J.) led Providence with 12 digs in the match and Catherine Harding (Kalamazoo, Mich.) recorded 23 assists.
The Friars return to action with a BIG EAST match against Seton Hall on Wednesday, Oct. 7. The match will be played at Alumni Hall/Mullaney Gymnasium in Providence, R.I. and is scheduled to begin at 7:00 p.m.
