SMITHFIELD, R.I. - The Providence College women's volleyball team fell to intra-state rival Bryant in straight sets on Sept. 1 in Smithfield, R.I. The Bulldogs took the first set, 25-16. Providence battled Bryant in the second and third sets, but fell, 25-23 and 25-22. Bryant improves to 4-0 overall on the season, while Providence drops to 1-3.
Kayla Fitzgerald (Redlands, Calif.) led the Friars with 13 kills and finished second among her teammates in digs, with seven. Freshman Allison Impellizeri (Seaford, N.Y.) notched 12 kills for Providence on 21 total attacks for a kill percentage of .524. Marina Rose (Coventry, Conn.) recorded seven kills on just 11 attacking opportunities for a .545 kill percentage.
Setter Jordan Wiesler (Coconut Creek, Fla.) led the way with 34 of the Friars' 36 assists in the match. Michelle Cruz collected a team-high eight digs.
Bryant was led offensively by Sophie Hoekstra, who posted 15 kills. Kristin Kingi also recorded double-digit kills for the Bulldogs, with 12, and added nine digs.
Providence returns to action on Sept. 4-5 at the University of New Orleans Tournament in New Orleans, La. On Sept. 4, Providence will face Eastern Washington (Noon) and New Orleans (7:00 p.m.). The Friars finish play on Sept. 5 against LaSalle (2:00 p.m.).
